Okay so what is the absolutely easiest treatment I can tell my boss they need? He is not a chicken person more a they are egg producers person so need the keep it easy method.

Get some Vaseline and coat his legs in a thick layer. Will need to be done prob every night for a few weeks until his legs are clean and clear again.

I use Vicks vaporub, tell your boss to wait till he's on the roost for the night. Apply it nice and thick, making sure to get in between and under the toes and right up into the feather line. Once a week for 2-3 weeks usually does the trick. It works on the same principal as Vaseline , but the camphor has a soothing affect on the skin and I imagine the lice don't like it in their eyes. I've read a lot about castor oil on this site, so I'm going to give it a go next time. But for now Vaseline and Vicks are " tried and true ", and most importantly easiest to apply.

Thanks guys. He has a flock of Im guessing about ten so if this dude has it then I would think they are all going to. I wonder if they have other mites too.

Thankfully no contact with mine and they are not friendly (Ive never even been able to get close enough to count them properly lol) so Ive not even had any contact with them to bring it home.

They had almost totally stopped laying and then started up again lately when he began free ranging them. The lack of eggs could have also had a bit to do with this Id think.

So he only has to treat the chickens? Does the coop or roost need treating too?

Mites and lice will disrupt laying, but more importantly they bring the birds immune system down and leave them susceptible to other ailments. The coop will need to be cleaned out and washed down. At the hardware you can buy " coopex " in a sachet. It's a powder that you mix with water in a spray bottle and spray the nest boxes and perches. Then put new bedding down.
