Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I'm about ready to buy an incubator but the ones at bellsouth are a little out of my price range. I can spend around $200. Any recommendations? I was thinking the hovabator genesis?

I have the Hovabator Genesis, and I like it. It maintains it's temp quite well, though it does need to be kept in a room that doesn't have much in the way of temperature changes. I covered most of my water tray with foil so it would stay at about 40% humidity, and I only have to fill it once or twice a week instead of a tiny bit or water twice a day. Remember to order extra thermometers though, just to make sure it's calibrated correctly.

Make sure you get the auto turner though as well. It makes life so much easier.

Also, to keep costs down, I ordered it from America (Incubator Warehouse) and just bought the US to AU power point converters. It was actually much cheaper for me (Even with postage) and it arrived in less than two weeks. If you order it from the right place, it comes with a power converter to change it from 12v to the Australian 240v.

Have fun shopping, what ever you decide on

hey colourful what do you mean you cover your water trays with foil? is that the tray on the bottom of the hovabator?

i think im going to have the worst hatch this time around, on the 17th day nothing at all, no movements no sounds of chicks calling each other no pipping at all. might be zero from 120 eggs.

just trying to recount what went wrong, did have a power out for about 6 hrs, then had really high humdity for about a week. i did move them from one room to another room,

if i dont get anything from them saturday then i will throw all eggs out and start again.

i set eggs on the 19th feb 96 and 20th another 24, now i know the eggs are fertile as byc memebrs satay and kylesquails had a very high hatch rate with my eggs.

so can anyone shed some light?

Yep, on top of the tray at the bottom, under the wire and butterfly clips. I only leave a big enough gap (about 4 inches) to add water in so the humidity stays at a certain level and can go no higher. But everywhere has different humidity (depending on how far above sea-level you live) So you should test it over a couple of days, giving it more cover or less depending on how high the humidity goes.

I have no idea what happened with your hatch, and I really hope you get some movement tonight.

Either way, my deepest sympathies on loosing power for 6 hours (I have nightmares about that).

My last hatch, I lost a handful of Wyandottes because the humidity went too high and they couldn't get out of the egg because they had grown too big, but if that was the problem you might be seeing a little movement. Quail eggs are so very small that they don't seem to have much room to grow at all. That is actually exactly why I tried the foil idea, the incubator I have my quail eggs in literally can't go above 40% (which is where I want it) unless I remove some more foil. I have another incubator with a much higher humidity to use for lock-down and hatching.

Here is my new Turkey house made from an old generator shed. They'll sleep here at night, but have free range of the farm for the daylight hours. It's 1.1m wide by 1.8m long and 2.3m tall. I have a place built to hand a water container and a feeder (it's got a plank over it so the Turkeys don't poop in their own food). And you can't see it, but it has a ventilation hole up top covered by mouse wire.

I won't be winning any awards with this, but it'll do the job... I hope.

Also, quick update on my Turkey eggs. I'm really glad I bought the two white turkeys on Sunday, because it looks like I only have 1/10 eggs still with me. They were shipped, and all had broken air cells, so I didn't expect a good hatch rate.

Tomorrow I'm getting some Plymouth Rock and Light Sussex for an Easter hatching; Is anyone else doing one?

Not sounding good Luke for any more maybe leave it til tomorrow and then see. Glad you managed to get some to hatch though shipping eggs can be hard on them. Sometimes the air cells get detached and they never develope.
