Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

So many awesome chickens! I especially love the Brahma and intend to find some of my own one day...

Until then, here are the Wellie photos I promised satay:

Lady Welsummer, she and my boy are 12 weeks old. You can't really see from this angle, but she really does have the brown/gold lacing on her back feathers.

Lord Welsummer. As you can see, it's taking him a bit longer to grow into his own colouring.

And what the hell, here are some more that are in the same youngster pen.

My Silkie hen

Some Australorps with my cross-bred hen (she looked like a Welsummer when she hatched)

And my much beloved Sebrights who are now 14-15 weeks old

My handsome Rooster who likes to annoy my turkeys through the wire.

And a random picture of a corner of my big run I sectioned off with bird netting for my young Araucana. If you look closely, you should be able to see my single Belgian D'uccle. (I bought 8 mille fleur eggs, got one hatch and it was a lavender... seriously, don't have eggs posted)

Is anyone here going to the May Pure-breed poultry sale in Queanbeyan (20 min from Canberra) on the 19th May? It's not an Auction and they only accept pure bred poultry, but seeing as half the members show their birds, I think there will be lots of pretty poultry

Love the Welsumers! The sebrights are gorgeous - must admit I don't know much about the breed.
Are they purely ornamental or good layers as well?

I got my 6 baby chick home last night - will take some photos on the weekend.
Is there a way to tell autralorp and black leghorn chicks apart?

Great birds Colourful!
Red - Seabrights are actually supposed to be good layers. I think with them it really does depend on the individual. People have said they will have some Seabrights that lays huge ( well standard size ) eggs and then there other ones just lay bantam sized eggs and not so much.

Like luke said, it depends on the line the Sebright came from (show lines or the more backyard bred/utility line). My Sebright are neither of those, unfortunately. The hens they came from laid lots of eggs, but very few of them hatched live chicks as the breed is notoriously difficult to reproduce (because they are so very tiny, but haven't been around as long as the Japanese bantams). I bought 4 chicks, and two of those have non-symetrical faced so I can't breed any of them (because it's probably genetic) but they sure are pretty.

It's not too hard to tell the difference between the Australorp and black leghorn chicks. All my Australorps looked almost exactly the same (with white markings on chest and a few around the head) while leghorns (because the breed is actually rather diverse) won't all look the same from batch to batch if the hens are from different lines.

Im not sure about young chicks but when they are a bit older, austrolorps will have black legs and black eyes and leghorns have yellow legs and mainly black eyes with small ring of tan

You may wanna compare images on google. Or post some and we can have a look ! I'd be interested for sure
