Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Well, it is not good here on the quail front.

I decided to take a dive and cracked open 4 of the quail eggs to see what was going on. The first 3 had nothing in them ( not fertile ) but didn't smell bad at all and the yolk and white looked fine. They look very edible.
The 4th however had a very small quail in it. But The yolk in this egg had only been half absorbed, so either it had started to develop and failed or they are only starting now ?!?!?!?

that's bad luck Luke. i'm sorry. Most likely started developing and then stopped due to some reason, external or internal. How many did you set?

Chook, he is so purty. :drool

thanks, I set 14. But still have 10 left in the bator.

So was it a fully formed quail but with the yoke sack still not absorbed ? Sounds like if that is the case it has died not long before hatching. If that was the case could be a number of things not enough humidity and the shell will be to hard for it to break through, too much humidity and it will drown in the egg, Really hard to say unless you can see it for yourself Luke, It may just have stopped developing for some reason too.

Great photos, Hi all to the recent additions :) I love the clothes dryer nesting box darwin, that is cool as! I have a few new additions to the family, I was after some Jap quail fertile eggs but came home with 10 5week olds AND I'm happy to announce my golden pheasant girl Velvet now has a boyfriend!
400

He is still colouring up and in temporary accommodation until tomorrow when he moves into the new aviary I built. I'll get some more photos of him tomorrow :)

He is beautiful Chook :love

It was really quite small but you could see the feathers and little toe nails etc. Just alot of yolk.
I am really sorry your first hatch didn't work Luke.
My first hatch a while ago was with bought eggs, but the next one I tried I used my bird's eggs and nothing hatched. Very disappointing.
I am hoping for some babies in 8 days, day 10 today. Not my quail's eggs.
My birds are giving me 2-3 eggs a day now, but no idea if they are fertile or not. I guess there is only one way to find out :)
