Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Wow you guys are all really serious breeders. And here I am with my 9 chickens. 2 AL, 2 Sussex, 2 RIR, 2 Ancona and an araucana. No roo as the local laws forbid having one. Got my very first egg the other day hoping for an encore today. Do any of you guys show your birds. I used to live on 10 acres at mornington and loved it but am now in Townsville. I enjoy having the girls (demo squad) wandering round the back yard and I think the dogs like watching their antics just as much plus the dogs are good for chasing out the goannas.

A lot of us just dream about being serious breeders LOL Like you we arent allowed a rooster. Im just hanging out for a year so I can stagger my flock ages a bit then Im going to get some more favs to hatch but that will be all the breeding Im allowed Im afraid.

Ive thought about showing just for fun for the kids but then I read about diseases being brought home and forget the idea again. I couldnt bear losing a favourite hen or having to do the whole quarantine thing each time.

I use tec screws and pretty much bolt sheets of tin all around my hen house, they have a dog kennel (which is a massive air con duct out of an old hospital) I can usually lock them up in that too if need be. If they could come inside they would lol but having 2 boys, 2 dogs and a cat inside is enough :) But if you feel safer with them in the garage, do it :) Other wise you'll be worrying about them and putting yourself in danger if you go out to check on them. Have gone through many Cyclones myself, scariest was Tracy :(
I think everyone will know when mine finally hatch :) I can't wait :)
I miss the warm weather, we had a gorgeous 20c yesterday but it's back to winter here this morning, chilly 3c plus the winds are blowing straight from the Alpine's I think :(

Hello cheleB. I feel sorry for people that are denied the right to love a roo. My roos are great characters and much prettier than their hens. Spring is such a lovely time of the year. Babies everywhere .

I can see now why you were so upset that your camera went to WA. :lau

I used to do pet photography, dogs, cats and horses etc, can't imagine the patience you'd have to have to photograph chickens

At least dogs have some obedience to sit or stay lol
Take my hat off to you guys. Will see how I go when my chickens hatch :) Doubt they'll be that good though :)
