Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hi everyone, I'm up in Queensland and I've got a small mixed flock of 6 chickens (Australorp, Lohmann Brown, White Leghorn, Salmon Faverolles, Barnevelder and Araucana).

3 of my girls are laying and we're currently collecting almost 1 double yolk a week from my white leghorn - 'Namira'.

My Faverolles and Barnevelder are both just on 8 weeks old and I recently added the Araucana at 4 weeks old, so far these three haven't been added to the coop with the big girls so I'm sure that will be a tricky and eventful operation to look forward to soon

Welcome and good luck with your flock!
Yes, adding new young hens to an older flock is always difficult.

I just put mine in a cage in the coop for a day, then let them go the next day, never had a problem, the one at the bottom of the pecking order is the only one that goes the new ones

You should keep new birds in isolation for at least 4 weeks but preferably 6 before introducing them to your flock. It can take that long , before some of the very contagious diseases will show their " ugly " heads. One word , BIOSECURITY. That is why I don't show my birds. There are too many people not practicing it.

Agree. My two new pekins are able to free range but not near any of the rest of the flock.

I've just been out to get some lovely pics of the chicks and of course more of king George and his girls( just to tease Ben ) lol. There is a family of swans in the garden, so sweet.
Will get my daughter to upload them this arvo. We're off to the local market, while the sun is out.

Ha! Finally got through all the pages! :) welcome newcomers :)
Some great pics there :) nice new perches, and grats on the new pekins Satay, and for the hatch ash :) are those your show quality aras? That bandaid around fast.

I just had another nine of my own chicks hatch :-D six black (will be barred) and three white :-D I'm so happy :) I love hatching my own chickens' eggs. One of the black ones is super beefy. I reckon the occasional one must take after their dad, my big boy giraffe.

Ah, what an I doing describing them? Picture! :)

Oh and ruby, take your isa to the traralgon auction this Wednesday. It's at/near the Footy ground. Take the road that goes around the side, first left after you go under the bridge coming from the princes hwy. Then just a little ways up you'll see the (very small) sign :)
I hope that helps. It starts at eleven I believe.
It isn't the best auction but you should be able to sell your isa.

The chicks got and up grade on their aquarium.

How come these 2 chicks ( the ones I'm looking after ) are at least double the size of the ones the broody is looking after? It's not because they are older.

I can already see a rooster
