Hi, I am a new (ish...) addition to this site and am also an Aussie. I have a flock of 9 Silkie crosses, 2 White Leghorns, 1 Isa and 1 Jersey Giant,  and am hoping to add a few Araucana's in soon. I got a phone number of an Araucana breeder but can't get a hold of her, she never answers.

I have read around this site and on other poultry sites and I have seen that the Aussie Araucana's are slight different to the American ones and have a tail. Is that true..? I don't particularly like them without their tails (no offence to those who love them..) and was wondering if they ARE different. Thanks for reading :)

Welcome!!

I know nothing of americaunas (including the spelling in sure) but I'm sure this came up about a week ago so if you have some time on your hands you could go backwards through the thread to find the info. Or someone who knows may chime in soon to save you all that searching :)

I'm talking about American Araucana's ^_^ I've heard they are different to the Australian Araucana's. I know nothing of Ameraucana's too xD

Oh my gosh Fancy those chicks are insanely cute! i love the little head puffs they have as chicks.. Been nervously watching my chooks today its been like 35 degrees and CRAZY winds in Sydney. Haven't been able to let the girls out all day it's just not safe enough

Thanks Daniella , they hatched a week ago and today I finally got my camera back.
I hope it cools down for you guys. I lost 2 silver laced Wyandotte in the few 40 + days we had in February . Put ice cubes in their water and feed them some frozen peas.

In the US Americanas and Aruacanas are entirely separate breeds. Australian Araucanas have tails, muffs, bearding and crests, but do not have those ear tufts that are produced by that semi-lethal gene \that the Yanks breed to for reasons that are incomprehensible to me! However the US Aras are far closer to the "original" South american bird. Where on earth did you get a Jersey Giant? I thought they were extinct in Australia? xxxxxx M

WELCOME!!!!!!
Sounds like a very lovely mixed flock.

That is the Araucana standard in America ( tailless ) then they have Ameraucana's which are also a different standard ( tail ).
Their Ameraucana's and much like out Araucana's.
here in aus we do have rumpless ( no tail ) but they are rare and I don't know any one who breeds for rumpless.
Ash ( a member on here ) says he gets a rumples kick outs from his Ara lines.
You will be much more likely to find tailed Ara's over here. Good luck on finding them, I know I have a few and so do most people on this thread so they are not to hard to come by.
