Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I do have araucanas jellybean but those babies were ashes. When I have them separated for breeding I send through the mail. Posting eggs is always a gamble cause you never know how aust post will treat them but plenty of us post eggs. Sure would be happy to help you out any times with some eggs :)

Never heard of that before! I wrap each individual egg in dry paper towel. Not sure what purpose the foil would have.:confused:

Still catching up on posts but on this, I'd maybe do foil around the egg then wet paper towel that way you get some humidity and heat protecprotection without getting the Eggs wet. I usually do that but around the carton not individual egg.

Sorry you guys are unwell :-\ I hope you all feel better soon.

I'm glad your rooster looks like he'll be on the mend Z :)

Ash, my gosh that's alot! Most I've ever had at once is I think twenty-something.

I only have eight Chicks at the moment. I lost one last night. :( the water I had in there for them leaked and they were sitting in wet possibly all night the other night before I caught it and one must've just gotten too cold and Didn't recover. One has a slipped tendon or dislocated knee or something his foot turns outward. He gets around ok but it's not something I can just leave I don't think. There's a woman on the fb page that might be going to help me. Other than that, they're looking good :) can't quite tell yet but might be a bunch of roosters :-\

Oh well they are in the bator now we will just wait and see how they go.

Howdy ... I have posted this in Emergencies/Sickness etc but I thought I would throw it out there to my fellow Aussies and see if anyone has any ideas?

I am hoping someone may be able to help?

Britney, Bantam Leghorn, no idea how old as she was a rush purchase from the produce store when Cilla lost her friend to a Staph infection; 6 months or so ago :-(

Anyway, Britney has laid one egg since September 19th, it was very small and perfectly round. She seemed healthy and happy, eating well, a poopy bottom for a few weeks that needed washing weekly but she does have lots of butt fluff. Last Saturday, let everyone out as normal, she seemed OK ... mid morning she starts getting lethargic and her tail is drooping. She was moving around a little but appeared to be straining. I let her go until Sunday and as she had not improved, I was thinking she may be egg bound, so I gave her a warm bath for 20 minutes; no change. Couldn't really feel anything that would indicate a stuck egg.
Even though I give them Apple Cider Vinegar with every change of water, I wondered if it could be worms; no evidence in her poop though. PS. Dusty is fine. So Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday I was sprinkling crushed garlic on their food and disolving powdered garlic in their water. No improvement, still going downhill. Thursday I rolled out the big guns and started them on Tetracylcline. I saw her drink some Thursday night and Friday morning. Thursday night she appeared too weak to jump to her roost and slept on the straw. Friday morning I left for work, thinking the worse would happen while I was at work. Get home last night and hubby has let them out for a free range, she is in the garden with Dusty, having a peck around, still a bit lethargic but her tail was not so drooped and she even had some cheese at treat-time! Last night she jumped back up on her roost at bed time.

I got up this morning expecting to see even more improvement and she is back to looking poorly!

Last night she did her first reasonably solid poop for a week, even though it was very small. This morning, the poops under her roost were runny (sorry about the grossness)

I was hoping before she went to bed last night I would see her drink the fresh antibiotic but she went straight to her roost. I can only guess that she drank more this morning when she got up.

So to sum it up:
* No real eggs since September 19, but seemed healthy.
For a week:
* Diarrhoea
* Lethargy
* Her comb has always hung over (big) but it is a very dark red, not bright red like Dusty's
* Loss of appetite

* No obvious discharges
* No breathing difficulties
* Only real signs of straining were on the original Saturday and Sunday

If it was not for the diarrhoea I would say she was sulking/broody except she is not 'nesting'? I have a broody who successfully hatched 5 eggs and now has 5 beautiful 2 week old bantam silkies.

Any ideas? I am at a loss. Maybe she perked up because she got a good dose of the antibiotic but hasn't had enough?

Thanks in advance!

Thank you sweet heart. I don't need any yet, but thanks I will know who to ask when the time comes. I don't mind risking Australia Post. Might get an egg transporter box I saw on ebay and post you one empty, so you have it ready to send me a batch when I need some. I can pay you for them and return postage through paypal or bpay when the time comes. Wish I lived in QLD near you, but the post will have to do. I know canary and quail eggs can last fertile up to a month if kept in a cool place, is this the same with chicken eggs? Anyways we can figure something out down the track. My girls have just started laying and I don't think they have any idea about getting broodie at the moment. Also are araucanas easy to sex?

Teila , going by your very informative list of symptoms, two things came to mind. 1 . Worms, all the acv and garlic in the world won't deal with some of nastier ones like tape. Most of the wormers available for chickens only treat for round worm. I use panacur goat wormer, in the states they call it safeguard . As the name suggests it is one of the safest wormers on the market.
2. Cocci, will be running rampant with all the moist humid weather around. There are something like 9 strains of cocci, and you won't always see blood in the poop. But the symptoms of lethargy and ill thrift fit. I would give her some buttermilk and source some amprolium after a good worming.
Hope you find an answer, diagnoses is often the hardest thing.

I agree with the above advice.
