Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

2 weeks away from BYC Aussie thread and 297 posts to read! Just like having a new novel waiting to be read. Reading through the posts, I was admiring some coops featured but wondering why no one else had goanna & python problems. Then came Luke the goanna wrangler to reassure me that I am not alone! If i have young chicks peeping in the coop , I can almost guarantee a goanna attack & I can guarantee pythons EVERY night so mine have to be closed into snake proof roosting boxes.

It is really badly wet here, I have never known my coops to smell before (disgusting bog like a pig pen!) and I actually feel cruel when I have to keep them locked up but due to two roosters & seperate flocks they need to take alternate days freeranging.

Fric & Frac, my 2 purchased frizzle babies (silkie x ?) have successfully integrated into my older roosters flock. No one likes them but no one is hassling them. I have NO idea of Roo or hen, obviously hoping hens but I think maybe one of each.I will try (dependent on constant down pour0 to get updated pics so you guys can give your opinions.

I was really interested to read the pekin VS cochin bantam info. I have always been totally confused regarding this but I am now sticking to the fact that mine are bantams & Aussies so they are Pekin! Have I got that right! I hope everyone who was wanting rain now has it - PLEASE- take some of ours.

Congrats on your first sale. This is not my first sale of eggs (first sale for my own marans though) so not sure why i was so excited lol. They were sold to a lady that often buys thing from me out here and takes all my excess roos. She is fertility testing for me like Sam. Express post is the best way to post eggs, If they can make it to your buyer intact that is the first major hurdle out of the way.

Hahaha I get that, it's exciting when it's the first anything. We have hatched heaps of silkies and sussex but had our first wyandotte hatch this morning and although we bought the eggs and hatched the parents these are OUR babies, it was so cool to see a little black chick working it's way out.

We ended up wrapping each egg in bubble wrap, put them back in the egg carton packed it with shredded paper then into a large box (big enough that the carton didn't touch the sides - thanks Bunnings lol) once again packed with shredded paper and sent express. Then we crossed our fingers.

I know of a lady locally who sells day old speckled Sussex. I was warned against buying from her because nearly all of her chicks turn out to be roos. I was privy to a conversation and the general opinion was that she should turn her temp down by 2 degrees and do a test batch to see if it altered the outcome . As I said , I don't know how realistic this is , but I'm guessing that Sid will be ready to give anything a try.
Here's a pic of my orphan duck and his boosum buddy.

Oh wow

Is that the wild duck?
Quote: Yeah, she sure was. She was actually all fluffed up and squawking at the Goanna!!!!

It's a fallacy. The sex of the chicken is determined long before it makes the incubator. That does however work for snakes.

Thanks! The great washing journey begins today. Just as I smugly wrote my last post about stopping the escapee, and she wanders into the kitchen and casually starts eating the cat food! Crisis averted, hopefully...I think I found her jumping point and raised the fence there another few feet Thank goodness for the big roll of plastic trellis!!
Ginger is in the nesting box though, so fingers crossed! I've just realised I should have popped an egg in there to show therm where to lay...oh well!
Right. During the clean up I found a flower pot with a rather dead plant and 11 eggs. Crafty girls!!

Great writing Luke, I know what I'm reading to my kids tonight.
Today there was a small fire up the road and the power went out for a few hours. I was worried about my eggs due in 4 days but now there is this little guy!

Yep definitely sure.... I've put it down to all the hot weather before I set them. She is as healthy as a normal full term chick, it is quite bizarre.
