Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Quick question before work (ugh) my chicks are about 5 weeks old (my friend is looking after them and I pick them up sunday) would it be possible to put a 3 week old chick with them without issue? Or will the older ones peck at it?

I just really want a silkie lol

Not very good news regarding the injured chick I've named Onni. I found her out of the nest on her back with the wound looking 10x worse than this morning.
I can only assume the others have pecked at it.
She was very weak and cold. I immediately scooped her up and set up a temp brooder box inside and had to borrow a lamp from my neighbour..
Hubby was not overly happy with that set up long term because of fire risk so I raced down to the pet shop and bought a ceramic heat lamp and set that up instead.
He's still not 100% convinced its safe. Ive got it suspended over the box not touching anything.
It's very touch and go for the poor thing but while she's got a bit of fighting spirit I'll do whatever I can to help.

Sounds like your doing a great job K. Only thing you could do different is to add a thermostat to your Brooder. It will turn the light globe off once it reaches the temp you set it on. I used mine for years without one and never had a problem but I find it easier then they don't get too hot.

It all comes down to the chickens. I mix agers all the time in my grow out house. Mine are usually 3 and 6 weeks old when I mix them but I don't normally add just one. If you are going to try put it in with the older ones at dark and them watch them in the morning to see how they react to the little one.

My funny story from yesterday afternoon. My little nephew Samuel was here for a few hours as his dad had to do some work at the uni in Gatton.. We are having a little look at some pictures of chickens on the aussie thread as well as pictures on bens thread.. He is asking about who's chickens are they for a few and then we get to some pictures of ben's hens... I say they are ben's chickens.... He says can we go see them... I say no honey ben lives on the other side of Australia.. He seems happy with that answer. A few hours later my brother comes to pick him up and he tells him... Dad I saw benjaminis chickens but we can't go see them cause he lives on the other side of the moonaverse. :lau You gotta love a 3 year old.:)
My brothers response was gee aunty kym is putting that satellite internet to good use these days if she can see pictures from that far away :p

Will a thermostat turn a ceramic heat globe off too, as that's what I bought last night? I had to leave it set up how it is this morning - bloody work!!
Hopefully it'll be ok

Yes sure will. That's what we use in our snake tanks. Prob only worth it if your going to use it again. I got mine from ebay from a guy in western austalia. Think it was delivered in a few days.

I'd say there will be issue. First quarantine as its outside your current flock but then also re ordering the pecking order. Won't be as bad as older chooks bit still will happen
