Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Went out this morning to change the water for the chooks and on a whim opened up the box they're in. I immediately discovered that the second chick was stood upon mid-hatch and was killed. I removed it and found a third hatching. Hopefully this goes better for him. My husband is -very- sad. He always takes this sort of thing very hard. :/

Yes, that is the main reason I stopped using broodies a couple of years back. It can be such a random process
with unacceptable losses. With incubators and a succession of secure brooders you have so much more control
over the whole process. I rarely lose a single chick after hatch these days.

He's building me an Arduino incubator as soon as the relays arrive and I think once that's done I'll just shy away from letting my hens brood chooks. They're good mummas but if something is preventable, I'd rather just prevent it.

Thanks guys.

Well they have been missing a long time and if Pew Pew was still alive near by we should have heard him crowing by now, he is really loud.
Also I just found one Marans dead in the over growth of the chicken pen. No clear sign of why she died.
I doubt the ones missing are still alive

Fancy how are your Wyandottes going and Kym how are those DU'ccles?

Wyandotte are going well. I have selected 4 nice BLR pullets to go with my best roo and I have a 10 week old cockerel that has lots of potential. My new SLW is due to come out of quarantine soon to meet his girls. Of the 2 SLW chicks I have left ( sold a few and a few were taken by the hawk ) I think I have a pullet and a cockerel. This years breeding stock look very good.
