Any possible home solutions for this - yesterday I found one of my gorgeous (yet hateful, how they hate
) red anconas with one eye swollen closed. I got her inside, opened it up, she still has her eye, with no visible injury on it, but the side of her head is swollen. No visible injuries externally, either, and no weeping. I cleaned things off and sprayed it with Cetrigen Antibacterial Wound Aerosol (I know it says not near eyes but I figured she might lose her eye from infection), and gave her garlic in her water.
This morning she was happy to leave the coop, but the swelling had not gone down, and the eye was still shut.
I'd really prefer to use some sort of ointment. I have access to a decent feed store and can get some things, but I'm not sure what. I'd prefer to try some standard medicine at home - while if she was hunched over or showing sluggish behaviour, we'd get to a vet, she seems happy to socialise, etc.
I saw precisely how she got it, because she DID IT AGAIN - she waits until other chickens are scratching up goodies in the straw yard, and thrusts her head under the claws to steal them before they notice!
