Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Any possible home solutions for this - yesterday I found one of my gorgeous (yet hateful, how they hate :D) red anconas with one eye swollen closed. I got her inside, opened it up, she still has her eye, with no visible injury on it, but the side of her head is swollen. No visible injuries externally, either, and no weeping. I cleaned things off and sprayed it with Cetrigen Antibacterial Wound Aerosol (I know it says not near eyes but I figured she might lose her eye from infection), and gave her garlic in her water.

This morning she was happy to leave the coop, but the swelling had not gone down, and the eye was still shut.

I'd really prefer to use some sort of ointment. I have access to a decent feed store and can get some things, but I'm not sure what. I'd prefer to try some standard medicine at home - while if she was hunched over or showing sluggish behaviour, we'd get to a vet, she seems happy to socialise, etc.

I saw precisely how she got it, because she DID IT AGAIN - she waits until other chickens are scratching up goodies in the straw yard, and thrusts her head under the claws to steal them before they notice!

I live out in the sticks so getting to somewhere which sells medical grade honey would be a challenge anyway - I haven't gone looking for it yet. Perhaps next I'm able to get to Canberra and I'll get some for my first aid kit.  I am opting to continue using Terramycin, as per your suggestion. :)

I went into Goulburn yesterday (nearest beacon of civilization) and could not find thin gauze (or any rolled gauze, seriously?) at any of the chemists.  So, not having anything to wrap the wound in (I used the last of my gauze on the surgery) I opted to leave the original bandage on (it was quite clean).

However, this morning she has stepped in a puddle of water my husband left in the bathroom (thanks, dude) and it is wet.  I am still without gauze (my husband is picking some up in Canberra today on his way home from work - from the same chemist we got it from last time).  I'm wary of leaving it another 6 hours before changing it though, and was contemplating boiling some of the cheesecloth I use for cooking, letting it dry in the sun and making a bandage from that.  Thoughts? Suggestions?

Otherwise, she seems perfectly herself, super-sweet, purring at me when I hold her.

There is nothing you can't buy on line. This is the horse supplier I use.

If all else fails try cutting up a ladies sanitary napkin, it won't be sterile but at least it will be clean and absorbent.

Safely locked back in the coop! I went outside to take a phone call and she was sitting in the shade by the coop door so I opened it up and she trotted in.

The heat must be making everyone crazy my boys are 2.9 and 4.9 and omg! Completely feral today, I'd call them animals but that would be an insult to the animals in the house. My poor 4 month old hasn't been able to sleep because the boys keep screaming for fun or fighting, which for some reason has to happen in my room where she's sleeping... I've stayed outside after I was done on the phone to watch the chooks for a bit, have to go back into the aircon soon or I'll melt.

I see yr online now. One of my girls had an injury which closed her eye too. I got some ointment from the vet. Check back later - when I get home I'll message you with the name of it. Get on to it quickly as I wasn't quick enough and her eye ruptured. Lucky I had a good vet who didn't charge the earth to remove it.

Cheers

You can buy chlorsig topical antibiotic drops over the counter at the chemist. Otherwise a saline flush .

And you can of course use Terramycin spray, ointment or powder in the eye.

The ointment I used was "Tricin" eye and ear. Apply into the eye. I don't know if it's available over the counter or not, so may not help you. But if it does worsen or even rupture it will be painful.

Good luck.
