No - they can be fairly flighty.

Christie - much better than my lawn. Are your chickens out the front? I so want to do this but fear they will walk on the road and be run down by the maniacs that drive up our road.

Yes front yard until I get my coop and run built as one of my dogs is a bit naughty, I generally don't let them out before 5 so they stay close to the house and it's cool enough for the kids to go out so I supervise. Hopefully we get a fence up next month so I can have them out longer, the kids are more likely to go on the road actually lol

Appps, I only have the one but my little araucana is the most timid of all my hens, very flighty and won't come close even though I've had her the longest and from the youngest age, impossible to catch if she gets out. But that works in her favour, she survived when the dog got in the old run disappeared and turned up on the front step the next day.

I'm kind of used to my Anconas, who consider the sight of a human to be some sort of message from the apocalypse, so by comparison, the Araucana is super friendly. Though she actually hops up for cuddles, maybe she's just like that.

The red anconas are pretty but man do they hate to be caught.

I don't mind flightyness. My Mediterranean breed has grown on me. My ara's are just coming into their voices though & they can't be noisier than some of my complainers - hopefully!

I have a question and that is how do I know when any of my girls are coming into lay? I know it's early days yet but just wondering. I have one girl who seems a little redder in the comb/face than the others and she has made a different cluck occasionally than the others.

I'll check back later in case of replies as have to get to work now.

Main sign is red combs. They should start to squat too.

Hey all.  I've been really busy with my studies and building our brooder for the chicks who have seriously outgrown their little container.  On top of that my mental health is in a downswing so my interest in almost everything is bottoming out.  Had some nice chicken cuddles today which helped a bit.  My Golden Spangled Hamburg hen has taken to hopping up in my lap for a pat.

After a look at Bumblebee's wound yesterday we decided to remove her bandages and leave them off.  It's looking quite good.  I'll keep an eye on her over the next few days to make certain that the improvement holds.

My head is crowded full of vet studies.  

Chickens are great therapy. When life gets hectic, I take a cup of tea and a couple of slices of bread and go sit with the chooks. Whilst I'm chilling out I do a visual check on the flock.
Once the bandages are off give the wound a good spray of Terramycin , for good measure.

How good are those spray on antibiotics? Anytime I hear someone wistfully talking about the past I just kind of stare...we can now cheaply and painlessly treat these things with a spray, it's awesome.

I have some spray on bandages at home, but the alcohol propellant stings like the proverbial. Might work on legs or other non-feathery areas, though. I don't use it on myself anymore.

A can of Terramycin costs $30 . The last can I had last 2 years. I've used it on a gaping hole in a goats head after the horn was ripped off, in fence injuries on young horses, abscess in horses hooves , bumble foot and chicken comb removal ( after cock fight ). It can of course also be sprayed directly into the eyes.
It is a must in the first aid box !
