Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Omg. Teila that's terrible. Years ago I used to play a mixed in door volley ball with friends. One of the guys on our team this day kept making mistakes and got so annoyed once he slammed the ball in to the wall and it came back and hit me in the face knocked me fair over but not unconscious thankfully.

Nah, it wasn't so bad satay, my son is 28 years old and he seems to be OK

Ouch! Did you throw it back at him! :)

Well I do show dogs, @Teila so I can attest to mine being better cared for than myself!
Yes I do have a quarantine area

I wouldn't put her straight back into the flock without her spending some time in ISO at least.

I haven't completely made up my mind as yet.
Hi K-Spot.

Like you, my cats, dogs, horse and now chickens ( at all times - no matter about showing ) got / get better care and attention than I give to myself. I'm a person who does not like useless slanging matches, even though there might be a lot I'd like to say. .... the person I knew who had the dog with the saucer sized eczema area on his back, when I mentioned it ( out of concern for the dog ) said " Oh yeah - I know about that - he'll be right in a day or two - no worries, don't concern yourself " - and walked away. Mind you, she didn't have to explain herself to me, nor would I expect that - but it was so flippant and brushed off as though the dog really did not matter. I should have realised that in grooming him, she would have had to have known - so should have kept my mouth shut. That was my silly fault, for not thinking before opening trap. ... But I was a novice at dog shows. .... and didn't last long at it either. Did not like the atmosphere one bit.

Some weeks prior to the cat show at Royal Melbourne, I was preparing my cats with lots of grooming and their usual good food, and asked another cat owner ( much excitement and enthusiasm about the upcoming Royal Show for us both ) if there were any tips to having them look perfect on the day. .... " Give them 3 - 4 drops of Pentavite ( infant tonic ) each per day - wonderful stuff for them " .... They began to look ragged, rough in the coat, had 'starey' coats, and were a bit listless. But ate, toileted and slept well. No temperatures either. .... So I phoned the owner of the stud tom who had sired my Mings' first ( and only ) litter, to ask what I could do, knowing she knew heaps about cats. I did not at that stage know she was a show judge as well !! .... She asked me if I had been giving them any different foods etc. - "Yes, Pentavite" .... "And who advised that to you Anne " she asked - with ice in her voice. ....adding very quickly that she did NOT want to know the name of the person .... as she herself is a judge. ( not that they know who owns what when judging comes around ) .... ( this dialogue is from memory and is not verbatim ).

"Whoever told you that, did so with one thing in mind - to reduce any competition she might ' think' there would be. Is she showing at the Royal ?" ... "Yes".
"There could be nothing worse to give your cats than Pentavite ... it doesn't hurt their innards, but makes a horrid mess of their looks " ....

" Put them straight onto 3 very small meals a day of chicken - only chicken and their water - nothing else, and you will see an improvement very quickly " .......... guess if anyone would know all the tricks that show people get up to, it would be that judge and breeder.

And I did see them improve quickly - just one week to spare before show time, they looked as good as could be. Each got a third place ribbon in their category. Ming and her daughter, Tiffany. But that experience was it for me. Such a hugely long day - 7.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. with no excuses for leaving unless told to do so ( i.e. with a sick cat ! ).

I now only have my dog and my 3 chickens. ....

Well - considering this is a chicken site - I have gone waaay off topic. !!

Apologies folks, but thought I should mention it all. .... I do believe however, that the majority of pet owners who show their animals / birds, are devoted to them and care the best for them. .... A few bad apples can termporarily ruin the picture though.

Cheers ...... Anniebee.

Hello everyone

The last few days I have had a less than happy chicken, she was eating and drinking well but not interacting with all the other chickens and didn't seem very happy when moving about so today I had time to check her out properly. I found that she has large abdomen swelling as well as a build up of feces around her vent so I took her up to the house, cleaned all the crap off her feathers and trimmed around the vent area. I then placed her in warm water and massaged the swelling as this is what all the egg bound threads said to do. However I couldn't feel anything that would represent an egg in her and nothing came out of her vent. After 20 mins of this I gave up, dried her off and now she is sitting inside in front of the fire with water and food which she is consuming happily. She is still all swelled up, her comb and wattles have shrunk and she isn't to keen on standing. Her eyes are all bright though, shes looking around happily and is making a few clucking sounds.
Any suggestions on what to do now or what else it could be if she's not egg bound?

Hi Lucas, doesn't sound very good. Try adding a couple of tablespoons of Epsom salts / magnesium sulphate to the bath. It may be egg peritonitis that leads to ascietes building up in the abdomen.

What's her poop look like ?

Still a few other things it could be. Need pic/ discription of poop. For the warm bath 20 minutes is about the minimum time you want. If you go again for 1/2 hours won't hurt and might help. Also does her vent look normal after you cleaned it up?
