Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Seems everyone is getting ready for spring early this year with all this hatching :)

With the way the weather has been here for the last few years I wanted to get the chicks out now so that they will be big enough to survive the summer heat. Everyone that had little chicks last December here lost more than 90% but most of the over 12 week olds survived. So I am only my last hatch until februrary.

Oh that's sad. I hatch all year round. Personally I find summer better cause you can just add a frozen bottle to the outside of the brooder. This hatch I am bringing my brooder inside so hopefully I see it before bed and don't get distracted like last time.. Temps are weird for sure right now. we had really cold over night temps for 2 weeks and the last few days have been warm, It was 15c when I got up this morning. We are meant to be back to cold over night temps early next week.

16 polish eggs set to hatch on friday, just put 1 doz fw marans and 10 Araucana eggs in the other incubator and 5 sweetgrass and royal palm turkey eggs hatching next wednesday. Very excited never hatched turkeys before :)

Ah I love turkeys.:love

Two little bubbas were out yesterday when I got home. Both are black with a dash of brown on their heads, black skin, 4 toes and feathered shanks

Yay at 7 mths old my rooster crowed today !

I know what you mean by Yay to crowing now. My polish frizzle just started crowing this morning and for the first time ever I was so happy to hear that sound. I've been waiting for months for him to mature. Yesterday he started chasing girls and now he's crowing. My baby boy's all grown up :)

Hi all,
I'm in the Wet Sundays....well officially the Whitsundays but we're currently having a little bit of wetness. We are new to chooks ado got our first 10 about 6 weeks ago..... we've had 3 eggs so far and neighbours are beginning to drop in egg cartons....do you think that is a hint that they will be happy to take any excess to our requirements. We live out on a very relaxing acreage, bordering on rainforest. The girls are very happy and very relaxed free ranging. I get lots of helpers in the garden every time I'm out doing a bit of weeding or digging and its lovely to see them all so busy.. Still in the process of coming up with names for them all. Letting their charactors develop.

Hi and welcome to out zany group!

I happily give my neighbours my excess eggs. After all, they do allow me to keep my rooster when council local laws says I'm not allowed to. I think of it as a thank you payment

Congrats on the hatches everyone. Unfortunately my little silkie momma went off the lay yesterday. They were due to hatch next week, :( I'd say a rat spooked her, one of the eggs were crushed. By the time I found them they were stone cold.
Oh well back to the drawing board. I will set some under the very next hen to go broody. One of the docs wives has placed an order for BLRW.
The weather here has been ' spring like ' during the day. All the daffodils and jonquils have their smiling faces on. However we have a big comp on this Sunday and the forecast is 10 degrees , windy and rain, of course.
