Morning friends

If the weather forecast is anything to go by, this nice sunny morning is going to become a storm ravaged afternoon … might just have to break out the run rain coats at lunch time … No idea how I managed before the BOM Radar

Must remember to move the tomato and capsicum plants to shelter also ... they both have flowers or tiny fruit which I do not want bashed off by heavy rain.

Oooh mamabokbok that is exciting! That first egg is so very special; I have pictures of all my gals first eggs. The bantam eggs are cute. Getting more than we need at the moment, I have been sharing ½ dozens with my neighbours. Luckily those neighbours are just couples or singles and not large families because a ½ dozen banty eggs is not much and they do not lay fast enough to share dozens

Tee hee Anniebee trust me, if they were ‘my Crows’ they would not be an issue .. it is only the fact that they are protected that is saving their evil black butts Actually, that is not true, I could never actually hurt them but that does not stop me thinking about it .. lol

“So what is the difference between ravens and crows? The correct answer at the end of the day appears to be 'nothing'. If you rephrase the question to 'how can you tell the difference between the different species?' the answer, at least in Australia, is 'not easily!'. Australian corvids are almost identical in appearance. The most reliable way of knowing is simply knowing which town you are in. In Melbourne and Adelaide your local 'crows' are Little Ravens. In Perth, Canberra and Sydney they are Australian Ravens. In Hobart, they are Forest ravens, and in Brisbane and Darwin they are Torresian Crows. Note, however, that there may be other species about, such as the elusive Australian Raven visitors in Melbourne.”

Be them Crows or Ravens .. I am sticking with Evil Black @#$%’s

I find retaining my sense of humour where they are concerned helpful … but there is a fine line between laughter and a maniacal chuckle

Bethan congrats on Harri’s laying two days in a row .. my little 7 month old banties are laying nearly every day but I have noticed this drops off when they get older with the bigger gals maybe laying 3 days and then taking a day or two off.

Fancy good luck with all the upcoming comps. I am not one for Royal Shows but if I was going to go to one, I think somewhere like Tassie would be nice in that the crowds I dislike so much may be more tolerable.

Another beautiful picture!

satay I hope all goes well for Patsy and looking forward to pics of her little one(s).

Hey everyone. Can i jump into this convo? I just joined a day or two ago. I am from the mid north coast of NSW. I only added poultry to my menagerie this year and now have 5 chooks, 1 mallard, 6 ducklings and 1 chick. The chickens are by far the favourites of my kids especially since the babies hatched. Looking forward to sharing ideas and learning more.

Re bantam egg laying routines, Harri has been laying on alternate days. Her eggs seem to be a good size for a bantam although I tend to cook them in twos. I give the extra egg to family & my little grandsons always ask for "Harri eggs". I think its because she loves their cuddles, & they love hers :)

Came home to another Harri egg! Im thinkin it took her by surprise coz i found it in the run. Maybe she is goin to get into a routine like yours Teila. I mustn't forget Ruby, she aces it every dawn & lets everyone in neiboring townhouses know all about it. Tee-hee!!! ;) No one complains though.

Teila I didn't know that crows were protected.
We live in a grape growing region and the growers here are allowed to shoot birds that are considered threats to their grape crops. The first time we heared the shots we all nearly shot our pants!
:lau
Kind of used to it now tho. They are only supposed to shoot the 'pest' birds such as the pink and Gray galahs that decimate their crops, but I wouldn't be surprised if a few 'crows' said hello to an occasional bullet.
And hey, who are we to argue with a farmer with a gun.

Last night when I was locking up the girls, I noticed that one of them was using the perches I made for them. Hurray :D

She was on the very top perch and all the others were on the ground directly under her!
Guess we now know who the top bird is .
Wonder if she chirps "Geronimo!" As a warning to those below during the night :)

Whoever took my sweet Cilla and put this Mega GodCilla in her place … ha ha, very funny, you are not fooling anyone. Now give me my chicken back!

After trying the gradual lock out of the nest box and sleep on the roost method … Mega GodCilla has earned herself a stint in the broody breaker! Not only has she made everyone’s life miserable while she is locked out of the nest box, she will not leave them in peace when they are trying to lay an egg and constantly harasses them, pulling on their comb and just being GodCilla. She has to go into solitary before someone else does because they are bleeding! Poor ole LuLu is getting around with a badly bruised comb.

Anyways, I do believe I heard a collective sigh of relief from the flock when GodCilla was captured and contained and hopefully now they can lay their eggs without being beaten up.

Hey there LanaDucky welcome to BYC and also to this thread … always good to meet new people and share ideas.

Aaaw Bethan that is sweet about your grandsons and Harri. Sorry, I forget, is Harri your Pekin? Even though Blondie and Cilla [Pekins] always lay in the nest box, I am forever finding their eggs on the coop floor or in the run. Because of their very fluffy butts, if they linger in the nest box, the egg dries and sticks to their feathers so when they jump out of the nest box, it goes with them and then drops off at some point. Maybe that is what happened with Harri. I had to bail up Blondie last weekend in the garden as she was quite happily scratching in the dirt with an egg stuck to her butt

locknest4 maybe it is just in Queensland but we are not allowed to harm a Crow in any way or interfere with their nests etc. Congrats on your girl using the roost .. yep, it should not take the others long to work out that sleeping on the roost beats getting pooped on

TGIF! My plans this weekend ... find the real Cilla! lol
