Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Sweeteners vary but are usually caster sugar, white sugar, brown sugar, or a combination of the three.  Pumpkin pie also usually has cream in it.  One of my hacks is to substitute melted vanilla ice cream instead.  Spices are traditionally ginger and cinnamon in fairly large amounts, about half as much nutmeg, and a tiny pinch of ground cloves.  It's a very sweet custard-like pie.  Mine is usually in a crust made from ground almonds and crushed biscuits.  I've offered pumpkin pie to a grand total of one Australian who didn't LOVE it.

I'm more fond of it than most - perhaps because I'm American. >.>

Also Vegemite is repulsive.  Just sayin'.

Thanks. I love Vegemite us Aussies must really be an odd bunch.:lau

Hehe, Vegemite is definitely an acquired taste. My hubby took heaps of it to America with him when he was on a 6 month post. He told the American and Italian navy seals that it was made from cows blood, needles to say none of them liked. ;)
We had a scorcher here but thankfully today it has rained all day. :) that's why I love Tassie, never stays hot for long.
My chickens had couscous and ham with mini puddings ( muffin the cat got in last night and licked all the white chocolate off of them ) . A lady picked up the last of the Silkie babies this morning and I have more hatching now.
Was so hot yesterday, hottest Xmas day recorded for Tassie , that we didn't even touch the trifle, so looks like it will be fried ham and eggs tonight with trifle for desert. :)

1000

It was even too hot for us taswegiens to cut the Xmas cake.

Australia sure is a strange country up north of here flooding. Those horrid fires down south and Tassie frying. On Christmas day at my brothers it was cold and rainy for half the day then it stopped and the sun came out and it was hot as.

Those fires have been awful. There was one story about a guy who grabbed his dog, cat & chook when he left with his family. So nice that the chook wasn't left behind.
Anyway, I have decided that my chickens are missing that animal sense that is supposed to tell them when rain is coming. I've had to run out in several big storms to get them into their run. Today I raced outside to get some washing in & they were all behaving as if it wasn't about to storm. I got them into the run & a few minutes later it absolutely poured down. Is this a chicken thing or am I just lucky?

Just a thought Annie, do you think your hen is eating feathers ? Methionine deficient feeds can eventually lead to this behavior. The hen will actually pull her s and others feathers in an attempt to satisfy her requirements. I would be inclined to add a poultry vitamin to their water once a week.

Once again thank you Fancy .... will have to find some poultry vitamins this week ( hoping my stock & produce merchant is open up to New Year ). Meantime I am upping the protein for the two big girls.

Today she hogged into crushed boiled egg, raw rolled oats, cheese, the remains of the yoghurt and a sprinkle of olive oil. They all ate it, but I was delighted to see her real enthusiasm.

Will be offering a whole range of goodies including couscous in the coming weeks. Plus the vitamins for her, when I get them.

I doubt the other two nosey parkers need vitamins ???

They are very very feisty. Get into all kinds of mischief ! .... Little Mindy Araucana, makes the strangest of noises ( always has ), but has added to her repertoire. Today she was mimicking ( both hubby and I agreed about it ) ... wattle birds ??? Yep. Whether she continues it, is another matter !!

Have read that they can be mimics, on other sites ... and why not. They are birds, mynahs do it, magpies do it, cockatoos learn English and all that. !! Fascinating creatures - chickens.

.....

So my daughter was correct - thanks for that info Fancy. I am wondering why that might be ? - considering Tasmania is so much further south - ( which kind of should be cooler ?? ). Do you know if there is a specific reason for that .... amazing really.

Cheers ..........

Annie, I think it has something to do with the hole in the ozone layer, apparently is directly above us . I know for sure that the sun here has some ' extra bite ' I can't be out in for very long. Of course with my hours spent mowing and gardening I wear sunscreen , long sleeves and a hat , but I've had many Basal cells removed from my upper body over the last few years. Just part of being an Aussie kid . ;)

Good morning Friends

I mentioned 4 days ago that LuLu was ‘a bit off’ but she is fine now .. probably just the heat knocking her about a bit as I suspected.

Dusty usually moults in February/March but I think she may be thinking about an earlier moult this year.

Other than that, I got nothing! No news, just plodding along and enjoying the break .. today I have decided to clean all the windows and screens.
