Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Fancy that is sweet of you to ensure that your chickens who are starting out on their new adventure do miss out.

As I mentioned the girls have taken to coming down from the coop for breakfast and then going back up again, just chilling in the coop, which is not something they have done in the past.

As the road works have not started yet today, I truly believe that they are doing this because they can now that they have a nice roomy coop and/or because they are enjoying the radio.

Anyways, my imagination kicked in and I started thinking that this is actually their morning meeting.  Even though Cilla is matriarch, I imagine her handing the role of chairing the meeting over to Dusty which would go something like this ….

Business carried over from last meeting:

Meal Worm Crisis:
Dusty advised that due to the arrival of new supplies of meal worms, the previously agreed on nomination process for a sacrificial chicken to ensure supplies did not completely run out has been put on hold.  Bottom of the pecking order, Crystal, was heard to breathe a sigh of relief.

General business:

Dusty thanked KiKi for her enthusiastic efforts in her role of Coop Crier but suggested it could be toned down a little.

LuLu raised the issue of KiKi picking on her and ‘Should KiKi stop this practice?’ was put to a vote.  The ‘No’s won with Blondie and Crystal voting in the negative because that means KiKi was not picking on them and Cilla and Dusty abstained due to lack of care factor.

Discussion was held around the previously unanimously voted practice of demanding free range an hour before the scheduled time.  While the consensus was that it was not working, a decision was made to continue the trial.

Dusty tabled that herself and KiKi were continuing with the Dried Crickets trial and that a decision on whether they should be eaten or not should be available at the next meeting.  There was some disgruntled discussion from the floor that the decision was taking so long because Dusty and KiKi wanted to keep all the dried crickets for themselves.

There was some discussion around the practice of moulting and when to terminate the activity for this season but as Crystal was still moulting, this has been deferred.

Discussion was also had around the practice of laying eggs and whether it should be reinstated.  It was unanimously agreed that it would not be reinstated and the current practice of nominating an individual chicken to lay one token egg every couple of days would remain.  KiKi volunteered to lay the token egg for today.

It was agreed that there should be at least a bi-weekly alarm drill to ensure that the hooman was still responsive and to ensure the drill was effective, a decision was made that an individual could randomly and falsely raise the alarm at any given time.

Meeting closed with the flock being asked to ponder whether they petition the hooman to change the radio station.

Love it

Always happy/grateful to get advice.  That's the best part of being part of this forum. Sometimes someone will see things in a different way and that helps. :D

Yes we have been trying to make everything very secure. Because we have been changing things around and building the ne coop some fences we thought were secure weren't. He has even taken a gate off the wall before.  This morning he hasn't touched the gates or fences. But the  little girls and boys free ranged all day yesterday while Paul took out the old nesting boxes and put in new ones for our little ones to use when they grow up. So Bear probably free ranged  :drool  himself last night. YUCK  :tongue
Paul made the nesting boxes to the size recommended on most sites but they look too small for the Australorps does anyone have measurements of theirs handy, it would be great to compare.

Fancy I hope the fires are out now and everything can settle down now. I love that photo, what a beautiful girl. Are wynadottes friendly maybe I could look at some if they are.

Teila  I love the minutes I can just imagine then hen meeting.

Mine ISA's decided not to use the new coop last night not sure why not. They were in there the 2 nights before that.  Not sure if it got dark too quick and they didn't get in time. It seems to be getting dark very quick lately.

My nest boxes 30cm cube, but the RIR and Astralorp wouldn't use them . New set is 45cm. Now the big girls use them, but 1 bantam won't.

How bout one of these ?

So cruel.

I want more than one. Do they play well with others? How big are they? I will have to do some research then see if I can get some eggs. I love hatching the eggs. I

Anniebee Thanks for the info I will try even harder to stop Bear from eating chook poo. We usually hose the backyard down after the chooks free range.

sjturner79 Paul says thanks for the measurements. He will use the new ones he made that are 30cm cube for the silkies and build some bigger ones for the big girls.

The new coop

Used a dog ramp for them to get in.

nesting box they have never had dividers so we didn't put any in.

The girls seem to like it. We have hung the feeder underneath.

But we have a problem. I just went out to check on them 1 is sitting in the doorway another on the ramp the rest are on the ground. I am wondering if it's to dark in there the light comes from the door and the floor is 25mm mesh under the perch the rest is wood. I gave them some bread and they went in but came straight out. So I'm wondering if they need more light when the go to bed. I'm thinking because its not that dark outside they're not going in and when they do it's too dark. Is that a valid theory?
Can anyone shed any more light (haha) on it?
