Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Fancy I was told the reason the chickens we eat are so big is because the light is left on in the barns at night even the free range who go into barns at night a subject to 23 hours of light. So they feed 23 hours they get to the point were they can't stand any longer because their legs don't develop as quick as their bodies.

I try very hard not to buy anything not grown in Australia if its not grown here we don't eat it.

I was told boiled water didn't have some of the good stuff. I use a double filter on my tap water. It's so scary to think what we are drinking. Ours tastes metallic the filters do take the taste away.
I'm not sure I believe the bottled water is any better.

Love the worldly chook

MyHaven Sorry your chooks are sick. Sorry I can't help you. Hope they get better quickly.

Lights being left on so's chickens will eat constantly and therefore, fatten up ....

Now why doesn't that surprise me ???

Don't think much of bottled water either LuckysMum .... must get a double filter on my kitchen sink tap outlet asap. A good idea that.

Cheers ....

Check it out for yourself,
I know what you mean, I won't buy it after it didn't sprout. I don't think it rotted either. If you leave veges lying about, they sprout, they go limp and them they rot. I have compost bins and worm farm/s. I expect things to decay.... The other source of garlic I've seen is Brazil. I don't know what they do down there, it doesn't look as "weird" as the chinese stuff. Either way, I only buy local. As mentioned before, you can get Australian as mash in a jar. I get that if they don't have any local bulbs.

Yeah garlic is one thing I hate buying. It's not easy to find Australian grown, we don't have a big garlic industry here. The imported stuff is grown in places like China with who knows what sprayed on them (and possibly fertilised with human waste) then they spray it with a growth inhibitor to stop it sprouting on the way here. Then it gets sprayed again to make sure there are no pests.

I'm growing my own, you can get Australian garlic to grow from nurseries and seed places. I'm growing the purple this year as well as one elephant garlic as a trial. Huge cloves but apparently they are quite mild.

Check your minced garlic. Was reading a website for Australian garlic industry and it was saying a large portion of our garlic crop goes into mincing so there are jars of Aussie made.

I have looked for Australian made minced garlic in jars .... so far, have not found any. I have purchased the Gourmet Garden "made in Australia" squeeze tube type. Doesn't say it is grown in Australia. I may be being picky here with that comment !!

And you must have read the same kind of info. that I had ... about Chinese garlic and how it is grown and fertilised !! Whichever way one looks at it - Australian grown is the only way to go. And preferably in your own back garden !!

Have tried growing garlic with little success .... I will try again.

Yes potato chip --- at least if they sprout when left for a few days, you know they are still ok. And yes, vegies can go limp and rot .... not something I give to my chickens either. They get fresh stuff.

One way to keep celery in tip top condition is to wrap it in glad-wrap and in turn wrap the entire thing in alfoil. It keeps for a couple of weeks that way - still crisp, raw edible and usable, after using this way of preserving its life for what is a relatively long time for a vegetable.

The one I got last time was in a plastic "jar", it was squarish in shape and I think it had green writing. Could have been Woolworths brand. I remember it saying it was Australian because I remember buying it because all they had was the chinese mutant stuff and I needed garlic for something.

No, I've never read anything about how they grow it, I just felt that there was "something wrong with it" when I bought it.

The worms like the veges when they've got a head start on the decaying process. yum yum yum.

Yes it is amazing the amount of toxic chemicals that the law requires to be added to water to be considered SAFE for drinking.

On another note I need to find out a new solution for a cat flap as both blackie and amber figured out the cat tunnel today and were in the laundry stealing cat food.

Intrigued. What's the cat situation?

MyHaven Sorry to hear about Buttercup I hope the antibiotics clear the rest up quickly.

I totally agree out vets need all the help they can get.  We were very lucky no-one in our family had any problems. I know people who have.

I have lost a brother and sister to illness, going through that was horrible, seeing my parents, their spouses and children try and battle on was heart breaking.
So yes it's not just the vets but their families that need our support.

I do think we are very fortunate that war and sickness does not touch us like it did our families even 50 years ago, and hopefully our serving men and women get better support form the general public then they did back then. I know we can't rely on the government to do much.

Sorry I think ANZAC day and the anniversary of my sister passing  makes me a bit sad.

I get very emotional on ANZAC Day. I get extremely mixed emotions. I'm sorry if I stired feelings about your sister. I am so sorry you and your family had to experience that.

The Chinese garlic doesn't rot in my experience. It implodes and goes powdery.

I have had little luck growing garlic too. I did better with turmeric.

Coles brand garlic is Australian.
