Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

My best calculation would be 1/4 of a teaspoon to a litre of fresh water daily. It must be mixed fresh each day and remove any calcium sources ( calcium carbonate , shell grit ) .
The treatment is pretty much the same for most of the CRD's.

Thanks. I have been having trouble with losing posts lately after typing them. So second time round missed the dose they listed.
The dose you suggest is the same as for parrots 5g/l. For pigeons and finches it's half that. For ornamental birds they have a dry administration of 5g/kg over feed.

Thanks again. I really appreciate your help.

I feel very silly though, I thought it best to dispose of the buttercups body straight away. I should have raced her to the vet for testing.

I just went to coles and on their jar it says Garlic from china.  Maybe its seasonal with coles supplier and they get it where its cheaper.  Anyway Jensons organic says they only use organic garlic. I guess we have to read labels.  I always do and if it just says local and imported ingredients I don't buy it.

Your welcome, as I said most if not all of the upper respiratory diseases require the same treatment . If you ever need to take a bird in for necropsy, pop the body into a plastic bag and keep it refrigerated , not frozen and when transporting do so in an esky with ice packs, but not in contact with the bird.
Let's just hope you get the answers that you need to get on top of this. :hugs

Good morning folks

First up, definitely echoing that I do not think of this thread as a chook thread, more a virtual friendship with chooks as the main theme but support offered, given and received on a variety of levels .. thank you all

I wish I could be of more help but this one is way out of my league. I do, however, have you in my thoughts and have everything crossed that you can sort it out

LuckysMum on the subject of Australian grown, we were bombarded last night on Foxtel by repeated advertisements about the new, clearer food labelling commencing in July. While I definitely think it is about time, I am pretty sure I am going to be sick of the ads by July

mooandmcgee yep, chickens rock and my only regret with chickens is that I did not get them sooner.

As little ones my gals chest bumped nearly as much as the boys but they do not now they are older; probably because the pecking order is stable.

Anniebee thank you for the chuckle .. “puppy from another planet!!” lol

And, after all that, I have nothing! Lol

I miss KiKi terribly but I am not so sure the flock share my sentiment, in particular Blondie who has bounced back to ‘Princess’ status and LuLu is much more chipper now that she is not being picked on.

Mentioning this in current company is fraught with danger .. Enablers everywhere!!

Lol

But, I have found myself looking at Frizzles on Gumtree etc .. luckily the cons far outweigh the pros, for now

Coryza, MG and most of the CRD ( chronic respiratory diseases are far more common than you would think. Unless you had hundreds of birds it mostly goes unreported. The treatment is pretty much the same and a ' closed flock ' is recommended so that other people's flocks don't become infected.
I once took a roo to an avian vet with a cheesey ear and clogged nare. Turned out to have a sinus infection, it cost $150 for the consult and antibiotics. The vet made me sign a document to say that I had been advised that any bird that I administered the drug to would never be used for food consumption , including eggs.
The alternative is to cull any sick birds as soon as the become symptomatic .
Coryza is easier to detect because the bird stinks like death, especially around the face area.
The real problem with these diseases is that it might not even be introduced by a chicken, rodents and sparrows can carry mites from flock to flock and even mosquitos and midges can transmit them.
honestly i would treat them with the antibiotics for 7 days and then go from there. :)

A closed flock is not really an option. I would have to at least cull the birds I have in excess and all the cockerels would not be saleable. I'd sold one.

Are you saying that once they have had antibiotics their eggs are no good forever? And you can never eat them?

I administered the antibiotics this morning and was heartened when each drank as if it was fresh cool water on a hot day. It must taste ok. But I was saddened that my sweet Eye Spy Ninja (named by son) (marans) has succumbed. I looked at my poor Barney Cagney and she must have a splitting headache with synuses swollen. I can feel that pain I've had a headache since last Sunday.

I did not give the antibiotics to the nonsymptomatic pen (1 out of 6). My thought was if they show symptoms later they may not respond to a course if needed. What do you think?

I also didn't treat my brahmas in the brooder. Poor things don't get to go out on the grass now.

I am not even worrying about where it came from at this stage. I have doves, I have rats from when the neighbours at the back subdivided their block, evicted the tenants with the pet pig and demolished the shed. Oh joy, I had rodents everywhere. The neighbours two doors down are selling so have got rid of their flock which free ranged with automatic feeders. They didn't even live there. I find the automatic feeders and leaving out more feed than they need attracts rodents. And then I think back to the sick crow I found at the run. Someone told me that infectious bronchitis results in a very wrinkly egg being laid. One of my new birds has a wrinkly egg. She is non-symptomatic.

Whatever the source it got me and at a time I had peek numbers.

I am getting very frustrated with either the site or this device I keep losing posts. It happened again this morning. I then went to my phone and it logged me out. As if I remember my password to log back in.
