Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

A closed flock is not really an option. I would have to at least cull the birds I have in excess and all the cockerels would not be saleable. I'd sold one.

Are you saying that once they have had antibiotics their eggs are no good forever? And you can never eat them?

I administered the antibiotics this morning and was heartened when each drank as if it was fresh cool water on a hot day. It must taste ok. But I was saddened that my sweet Eye Spy Ninja (named by son) (marans) has succumbed. I looked at my poor Barney Cagney and she must have a splitting headache with synuses swollen. I can feel that pain I've had a headache since last Sunday.

I did not give the antibiotics to the nonsymptomatic pen (1 out of 6). My thought was if they show symptoms later they may not respond to a course if needed. What do you think?

I also didn't treat my brahmas in the brooder. Poor things don't get to go out on the grass now.

I am not even worrying about where it came from at this stage. I have doves, I have rats from when the neighbours at the back subdivided their block, evicted the tenants with the pet pig and demolished the shed. Oh joy, I had rodents everywhere. The neighbours two doors down are selling so have got rid of their flock which free ranged with automatic feeders. They didn't even live there. I find the automatic feeders and leaving out more feed than they need attracts rodents. And then I think back to the sick crow I found at the run. Someone told me that infectious bronchitis results in a very wrinkly egg being laid. One of my new birds has a wrinkly egg. She is non-symptomatic.

Whatever the source it got me and at a time I had peek numbers.

I am getting very frustrated with either the site or this device I keep losing posts. It happened again this morning. I then went to my phone and it logged me out. As if I remember my password to log back in.

I feel for you. For the swollen eyes you may get quicker relief from using Terramycin spray or ointment. Ive even used human chlorsig , (over the counter) for my hen when she lost an eye.
The antibiotic debate we had earlier on this thread covers the fears around using them in our food chain. The vets just have to cover themselves against litigation.
For the birds that are sick , they must be kept well away from those that aren't showing any symptoms . Always tend to them last and don't wear the same clothes or shoes into the ' healthy ' pens. Wear disposable gloves , if not wash hands religiously .
Remember that it could just be bronchitis, in which case it will pass. :)

I just went to coles and on their jar it says Garlic from china. Maybe its seasonal with coles supplier and they get it where its cheaper. Anyway Jensons organic says they only use organic garlic. I guess we have to read labels. I always do and if it just says local and imported ingredients I don't buy it.

Wow so much information on so many things.

The eggs shell in the garden apparently adds calcium to your crops and that is supposed to be good.

The puppy sounds adorable, Haha yes we did that quite a number of years ago. My son and his wife have a 10week old puppy and with the girls as well it can be bedlam.
Good luck and yes I was told puppies shouldn't be separated till they are at least 8 weekls old.

I have had garlic turn to powder too. DISGUSTING

Anniebee I will have to try and make some white moths. Last year I put a net over my vege garden and I still got caterpillars.

sjturner79 how are you getting on keeping the chooks out of the laundry. The only thing I could think of was putting a cat flap in a window so the chooks couldn't reach it.

LuckysMum .... didn't know about calcium being good for crops, but come to think of it, it makes perfect sense, while having the desired effect on snails.

Puppy is adorable, but the feistiest puppy I have ever raised. The assistance organisation who will take her back to train her for duties, when she is 12 months old, are the people who decided when this batch of puppies were to be given to puppy raisers. !! .... I am not impressed with the 6 weeks and 5 days old situation. They have not yet fully learned at that stage, from interaction with their litter mates, how not to bite - ( siblings let each other know in no uncertain terms, how to mouth and not bite ). She bites - chows down. She has not mouthed me - she has bitten me. 8 weeks is minimum - I agree with you.

According to the instructions, I am not permitted in any form of media to divulge the organisation by name, without permission ? ( not anyway at this stage - must check on that again ). At present I can say it is 'organised chaos' .... !!

At least she is sleeping through the night, so that is a plus. She is very dominant even at this early age, and our Golden Retriever, Ruby - keeps well away from her. I think Ruby is almost scared of her, and certainly does not encourage play - as that would mean biting and I think Ruby knows that instinctively. It is NOT puppys' fault at all. I just have to be firm in my resolve to break her of that habit, which has to begin now. At 12 weeks we will move onto different little procedures. ( I hope ).

..........

MyHaven .... I so hope and trust that your flock does not suffer recurrences or any more of the rolling illness they've had. Anti-biotics surely must be the go. Wishing you all the best with that, and thinking of you while you deal with it all.

I had a squizz at the coles garlic paste. It is marked "Product of Australia". Now, what EXACTLY that means in today's labelling might be a bit of mystery, but I thought they had to disclose if it was made from imported "stuff".

There is some criteria.

20 or 30% Australian means they can label it product of Australia - which is not the same as Australian made or grown.

An importer once told me they were importing concentrated orange juice. The added 70% water which was Australian water. So the could label it product of Australian. That was 20 years ago though.

The new labelling will be better, but all it'll do is tell us what we already know.... They won't start making things from (all) local produce because it's "too expensive".

Our containers in perth are different and it definitely said garlic from china. Other jars I saw said processed in Australia from local and imported garlic.
I tend not to buy coles or Woolworths brands. I have heard they have bankrupted small business because they tell them what packaging and how much they will pay for the product, where it will go on the shelf or if it will go in a catalogue. Bigger business can pay to have it on the shelf they want. One company was told to change packaging then they were told how much they would be paid for the product, when they had done all that was asked Coles said we won't be selling your product anymore. I have told our local coles that I'm not happy with the fact that more independent suppliers are not being represented anymore and that there are more and more coles brand products. I am a coeliac and a few years ago they said we are getting all new gluten free products for you. In the last 2 years that has dropped dramatically. As coles Simply brings something out the named brands disappear, I have asked for the brand of bread I use that they had previously stocked and they told me it was unavailable (yet it was in other stores). Sorry this just riles me no end that they think they can tell us what to buy. We are getting Aldi shortly and some suppliers I spoke said that should shake things up for the big shops I hope so. That's enough from me on that.

Fancy I don't take my hubby either all I get is why are you buying that and lets get this,

Hayleyandbrit welcome to a great forum I've been on since feb and have read so much great info and been helped with my many queries.as well.

Teila I am looking forward to better labeling I'm sure the manufacturers will find loopholes so they only tell us what they want us to know.

MyHaven I hope today was a better day for your chooks and no more of healthy one succumbed.
