Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Thanks Fancy,

So many business have had to close because they get built out and incoming neighbours make complaint. It infuriates me as people have invested blood sweat and tears into their enterprises. They call it progress.

Yeah like the sound of a revved hoon car is less disruptive than a rooster crowing, the smell of stale beer and vomit on the gutter is less offensive than the smell of animal manure. Like you say let them move to the city.

In this case what are they trying to use as the basis for taking action. I see they have had to take a sign down and apparently want to make building improvements which are being denied. I assume the existing buildings have been rejected as suitable and the sign removal as part of the close down. Sorry but the fighter in me against unfair authority has been awakened.

Thanks so much guys. Yes the chickens were there first, the horrid man also wants her aged ponies gone. Unfortunately he has friends on council and they are ignoring the fact that many of her customers aren't even here in tassie, but online. She's a fighter and the legal costs have her at breaking point. All of her other neighbours have been in to the shop and signed the petition.
It's BS and every signature helps.

Hey, Mother Nature, it is still Winter! .. Do Not think I am not going to notice you sneaking Summer in early!
wink.png

When I fed the girls nearly two hours ago it was 21C .. Hello! Winter Time!!

Predicted maximum: 29C

The good news [for me, not satay, tee hee] after today, the temps are dropping back to overnights of 10 – 12C and 5 days of a predicted maximum of 22C ... now, that's what I'm talk'n 'bout!
wink.png

Ash beautiful chickens you have there!

Aaaaw gees appps, not again! I did not know about the glass removing the Vitamin D, thank you for that good tip.

Coram I am sorry to read that your Barnvelder is not improving and the health issues you are having with your flock.

Tee hee Fizzybelle loved reading about your little smart alec Beatrice

Fancy how is your little hen with the prolapsed vent doing? Petition signed!

MyHaven I hope your little cockatiel is doing better. Today is going to be a good day to catch some rays.

On the subject of flock health .. it seems that this winter there has been vague, niggly symptoms in not just my flock, but others on this thread .. a bit of sneezing here and there etc. While I know that ACV is not everyone's cup of tea and just the mention of it can cause both sides of the camp to don boxing gloves
wink.png
.. I do believe that it helps to keep those niggling symptoms from becoming full blown illness. It has been reported to act as an antiseptic, killing bacteria in their throat and is reported to keep bacteria out of their water. I know it is recommended to people with sinus issues also. So, while not totally curing them of what ails them, my thoughts are that it may help keep them from going downhill fast and may give them the opportunity to build resistance/immunity .... Anyways, just my observations.

On the subject of Progress, in Bundaberg the Dog Refuge, which used to be considered ‘out of town’ found itself surrounded by progress and Leggo Land houses popping up everywhere …. You already know the end of this story .. Yep, complaints were made about the noise from the Refuge which had been there for years when the houses were built and purchased .. Progress comes hand-in-hand with Selfish!

Anyways, climbing down off my soap box cos I have an exciting day in the garden planned.

Since we built the new coop, there has been a patch of garden that is bare and not pretty. Until I worked out what I wanted to do with it, I just dropped the ornamental bridge on it
wink.png

Anyways, I scored a freebie, timber, free-standing towel rail which I am going to alter slightly and put in the garden as a decorative roost for the girls and turn the bare patch into another area for them which will hopefully be decorative also.

I will be sure to take some before and after pics

Thanks. My little hen is still indoors. She has been getting a bubble bath and blow dry each evening , and then I coat the protrusion with hemaroid cream. She is still eating and drinking, and once it reduces in size I will attempt to pop it back in. Thankfully she hasn't attempted to lay as I have kept her in relative darkness.
Some of the sneezes can be attributed to a dusty environment , and or clogged nostrils (nares ) .
I opened a bale of Lucerne her yesterday and the dust had me sneezing.
Half your luck , weather wise. It's snowing all around here. On flood watch again.
Hubby gets home from the US tomorrow , at least then I won't have to don my gum boots to feed the cows.

Hi everyone. Hope people and chickens are all well! Unfortunately the Barnvelder died, there were two other birds showing early signs of the infection, but the tetracycline antibiotics seem to have knocked that on the head. The peacock is fine, and I am keeping the birds in their pen for a few days to be certain. The cut for the new pen seems to be holding water...sigh...might need the bobcat on again to create drainage. Cheers.

Some Australian standard Araucanas for reference.

Lovely hens and rooster you have there Ashburnam. Your white aras' seem to be much taller than my Mindy - she is more like the one on the right, looking straight on at the camera, in the middle photo here. She has coffee coloured sprinkling throughout her large feathers, but since moulting this year, is completely white on her top knot beard and tufts. I only have one reasonable photo of her, which I will post again below here taken last year.

Although coop doors are open, we are copping another icy blast - temp is currently 6° and it is 12.20 pm, and all the girls are huddled in their coop. Buckets of rain overnight, but sun is weakly shining here and there. Another cold front expected early next week.

Love the winter ( usually ) but enough is enough.

Mindy -

Cheers ......

I am very sorry to hear that your Barnevelder passed away. I had a Barnevelder ( Milly ) who also died, quite suddenly - at around 9 months of age.

The only sign I had that something was not quite right, was that she began to stay away from her 2 friends for a day or two. She ate well, drank, and her poop was normal.

Morning on the day she died, she ate and drank - but sat down a lot on the ground. ... became lethargic, rolled over on her side in the grass, gasped a few times and was gone while I was watching her. Did not have a necropsy done, so will never know what ailed her. Her two friends ( Molly and Mandy ) .... remained healthy, and are still out there, doing their thing. So it was doubtful that it was Mareks' which Barnies can be prone to ( according to some sites ).

I do hope that the tetracycline works 100% to keep whatever the infection is in your flock, well dealt with.

It is always so sad to lose a lovely hen.

This is the before of the towel rail. I took the base off, took 30cm off the height and then but the base back on:

No garden project is complete without helpers

Haha, clever idea! Perhaps if you hang some feeders off it they will be enticed up on top of it .

Thanks Anibee and Teila. Yes, a real shame. I raised her from a young bird, broke her of cannibalising her sisters and she was full of personality. Fancychooklady, I'm wondering if you have any advice on the incubation period? I'm sure different infections have different periods though. Cheers.

The only way to ascertain which infection you are dealing with is necropsy. There a number of diseases that share very similar symptoms. Mycoplasma , coryza and infectious laryngotracheitis are just a few.
