Welcome to emelie and Sparky74 ..... you will enjoy these pages.

Sorry to hear of the losses of birds in this particular update. Always so sad to see and hear of.

..............

Happy, Prosperous, Healthy and Joyful NEW YEAR - to everybody here.

Any red fruit is said to have the antioxidants but blueberries in particular.
Dr Phil has a great Fb page this is a pic of what he removed from a hen that had ceased laying and yes the implant is helping many birds , especially isa Browns that are at risk of egg binding and peritonitis.

Fancy - I have often wondered if a jam-up in the reproductive system, ( egg binding ) results in a stack up of eggs, or just one - now I know. !! Poor wee chookies who get that. Astounding - all that was removed by the Vet in the photo. Thanks for all that info.

Mandy doesn't like the chopped up cherries ( tosses them out !! ) - but loves the blueberries. So she gets her next lot in few minutes, when I finish here - plus a bit of crumbled up multi-grain bread which I use to soak up the Anitone she gets. She adores being hand fed. Loves cuddles, and usually walks a few steps properly after a cuddle.
Maybe I am spoiling her, and she's taking full advantage ???

..... Yep, I am spoiling her, but why not. Will see if she likes strawberries too.

They all get water melon, but not sure if that is called a red fruit. ?? Today is cool enough to have re-introduced the ACV to the big girls water. Sure hope it remains that way.

Cheers - - -

Not sure I agree with your understanding about Isa Browns Mark. No offence but they are a hybrid bird purely created for laying hens and it breaks my heart to see them being abused because they don't lay anymore. My 2 were the sweetest natured but unfortunately one passed on early and the other was not well. I won't support people that breed them now.

Perhaps I expressed myself poorly. I hate to see any animal suffering and the dog attack was distressing for me, my wife, the chooks, our neighbour who came to help, the owner of the dog... everyone!
Perhaps my philosophy of chooks is different to yours but we want a productive flock, not just pets.
I don't think I could bring myself to kill a chook but I would have no problem making our old birds into soup. My wife on the other hand refuses to eat anything that's been walking around the backyard.
After the dog incident I found someone who was prepared to rehome my remaining ISA Brown as a pet but the chook died before this could happen.
My six 3 week old "Barnyard Mix" chicks go to a new home tomorrow.

I've had 10 Light Sussex chicks hatch this afternoon and the two remaining eggs have pipped.

Yes possibly you are correct in saying we see things differently. Nice you have a bundle of Light Sussex now. I hope they will be all that you hope for.

Anyone ever had a Seabright, I'm still considering what new breeds I want, and I'm just wondering how big they are, like in comparison to say a D'Uccle, Pekin or Araucana. Thanks :)

Blue Australorps, Houdans and Polish are on the short list.

Sparky, those are some super cute, fluffy little chicks. Sussex are fantastic birds.

Anniebee I bet Mandy enjoyed her attention being towel dried and put up in hotel Bathroom with room service and someone to have at beck and call. Chopped cherries and blueberries, can I come and live with you it sounds good.

Fizziebelle I can just imagine your lovely girls circling in for more pizza shapes.

I had Sebrights till last week they are tiny a bit like the size of a dove. Very beautiful and quiet, I absolutely adored them, but because they are so small I worried about them getting out. They went to my friend who has a lot of covered coops so they can stay safe. I couldn’t let the others free range in case they got out.

A bit hard to judge the size, but maybe you can see from the size of the brick.

I have 2 australorps broody again they are driving me mad. They seem to be playing tag. I have them sitting on the ramp again.

Sparky74 Welcome. I have Light Sussex they are beautiful girls. Yours chicks look beautiful. I’m getting clucky for some new chicks. But I better not I still have 30 girls.

Kooka Sorry to hear your Wyandotte passed away, though it sounds like she had a good life. With someone who cared about her.

I foolishly tried eating pizza shapes in front of them again, and I wound up wrestling one back off Annabelle, boy the strength she has when it's needed! lol. And those Seabrights are so very pretty!

Thanks LuckysMum, looks like they're about the size of a D'Uccle then if they're pigeon sized.

It's been really hot in Brisbane over the past few days, is everyone's chooks (whether you're in Brissy or not, it's mid summer now) coping with the heat ok? The midday meal of watermelon has been very well received lately. Hosing the trees and ground though, not so much, which is odd and annoying, as they love to stand out in the rain like silly fools, but the sprinkler setting on the hose? Nope.Glad I got the fan for them too, they've needed it.

Anyone remember the post I made the day the Rhinceros Beetles 'attacked' the chickens?
wink.png

They're back!
I threw what little was left of the girls watermelon in the compost bin last night.. Little did I know this morning, when I took the lid off to throw in the overnight chook poop, that I was crashing a party which, by the hissing and waving of legs, I was not invited to! LOL
They do look to be having a wonderful time

Your girls didn't finish the watermelon?! Mine always eat al, the pink and the white too. They only leave the green skin. Last summer we had a whole watermelon that got a bit old so it went to the chooks. I just cut a few holes in it and the stuck their heads in and ate it from the inside. In the end all that was left was a shell of green skin like a deflated soccer ball. What's the story about the Rhinoceros Beetles attacking your chooks? I grew up in Bundaberg, Qld and remember these beetles (also cane beetles and Christmas beetles) but haven't seen one in years.

Hey Sparky74

I only have 5 little banties so a large piece of watermelon can last a couple of days. Put it out on day one, leftovers in the back fridge overnight and then back out the next day. This one had been out for a couple of days and what was left was not worth putting in the fridge overnight so the compost got it.

Eeeew, Christmas Beetles give me the heebie jeebies .. I hate how they hang off the screens, trying to get in
