Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I just want to add some additional praise for the wool hen. You can find pics of mine in post #95 of this thread:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1133855/a-wool-hen-creating-one-today/90

We had our first frost this morning and the temperature dropped to 1°C and the 3 week old Araucana chicks are all happy and healthy.

I was a little nervous as there's only 4 of them (all the other chicks sold at the fete on Saturday) and I was concerned that they mightn't have enough combined body heat but all is well. I'm glad that I didn't succumb to temptation and give them a hot water bottle or worse yet, a heat lamp(!) as this now proves in my mind that a heat source really is unnecessary when brooding chicks. All they need is decent insulation.

Looks great Sparky I think I will give that a go too. When I do the next hatch.

I love all my breeds but the aras are delightful chicks. I live in FNQ where daytime temps on the top of the mountains can still be reasonable even in the depths of winter (the lowest here has been -7 however) but nights can get very cold. I find that I still need to keep my bubs under lights for about a week. After watching the broodies with their kids, I think that's enough. They have them out and wandering around after just a couple of days. One of my mums decided that my dining chair was a great spot to start laying eggs so we gave in and let her stay there until she was about a week off hatching, then we moved her gently to a special cage on the veranda. It needs to be secure as we have lots of pythons and night tigers slithering around at night. When the chicks were four days old we moved them all to an isolated pen inside our main enclosure where they can still socialise with the other birds but are in no danger from bigger birds.

The pics show Sandy (pekin/silky cross) having a feed and drink after laying an egg while her mate, Dudley, (Olive Egger) waits patiently outside for her. Out of all my flock these two continually bond after each batch of chicks; the next pic shows Sandy sitting on the eggs - we covered the nest and the chair with a towel leaving her room to jump out for her daily feed, drink and huuuuuuge poop; lastly Sandy brought the bubs inside to visit us on day 3 when we opened her box.

Wooo hooo! Hello Friends!

I have so much news! But so little time!

Puddy cats and chookens arrived safely at their new home .. all in one piece!

I will try and catch up with everyone soon and find some time to navigate the new look but just wanted to say that I missed you all and it is wonderful to see you all again!

:hugs

Oh, it's good to be back, I was starting to have withdrawals!

I'm trying to train the girls to use the roll-out nesting box. I've built a fence and they get locked in part of the yard that includes the box but is seperate from their favourite nesting spot, under the black boy. I'm having some success and there were two eggs in the box today.

In other news I think that my "Araucana" chicks might actually be Cream Legbars. Both breeds lay blue eggs apparently. Now that the forum is back up I can post some photos for confirmation.

So very pleased to hear that your girls and the your cats, arrived safely and in good fettle. Presumably, the girls have settled into the new coop ( Buckingham Palace by the looks of it - wonderful job by hubby there ).

I was actually in panic mode !! - password didn't work, couldn't navigate - changed password, so am back in - don't know whether I am still on the register to receive email updates ( which is what I always looked for in my Inbox, every day ) ... will just battle on to find my way around. Hope I haven't missed anything - BYH ? Does that have the same forum ( this Aussie one ) on there too ? .... I will now have to bookmark the site, and just check it every day I guess. Larger font is good.

No news from here, except that my new little boy "Benny" ( registered as Sherlock ) was desexed last Wednesday, and has finally settled down ( a bit ). No play with Miss Ruby for another 10 days or so. !!!

Good to be back :wee

Cheers .....

Good to hear from you, Anniebee. I was worried that everyone had got out of the habit of reading and posting and that this thread night die off! :th
