Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

The sad thing is that I had a fleeting thought that went something along the lines of 'wow wooklet must do well to stop hatching so early before the end of the year'. Then I realised....

Sorry to hear about the little ones that died. It's always sad no matter what the cause.

That's the sort of thing I do!! Nice to hear someone else does it.

They fight so hard to live don't they? I couldn't do what a lot of show people do,and cull them at birth if they're not right - everything deserves a chance. That's why we have an overabundance of Roosters here! Hubby gets into the mood and disposes of some, then he feels bad,and I can't do it,so the survivors hang around for a lot longer than they should. If only there was a kind way to stop them from crowing, and breeding and fighting!!

Ok so i may have been just a tad over excited to find a thread dedicated to aussies lol

I have only recently discovered this site but quickly became sucked into all the chooky chat goodness

Ive owned chooks my whole life but have recently started concentrating on purebred pekins and frizzled pekins, cant wait to get the first bubbas from the new family groups!

Hope everyone had a fabulous chrissy full of too much food, drink and plenty of nanna naps

chookoojode Of course there is a thread dedicated to us Aussies.. in fact there is actually 2 of them!!!

Isnt it wonderful to be able to talk chook.. ( or in my case duck ) and not have people look at you strange. Some people just dont get who interesting and wonderful poultry really is.

I think this was the first year I didnt get a Nanna map on Christmas day- with the storm hitting at about the time I would normally find a quiet place - there was no snoozing for me yesterday.

Sorry to hear about the chicks wooklet- I have only ever once sold to someone some day olds that they wanted to slip under a broody. Yes- they were ducklings- and they were going under a hen. I did get an email the next day to tell me all had gone well. I have a hatch due New Years eve- so I will be home watching the incubator seeing who is last out for the year - and who is first in the new. I like to be home for the ducks this time of year as there is a church near by that have fireworks going off a few times during the night.

Hi from Brisbane! I'm new on here and have a lot to learn. We got our first 4 layer chicks on Boxing day, with 4 more coming next week. Definitely throwing myself in the deep end! I'm so glad to see and Aussie thread - hoping to get some good info and share stories with others that know our climate/seasons etc... Look forward to getting to know you all

Mommapilko. Sometimes getting thrown in the deep end is the best way. At least you have the members on this forum to help you along the way. People here are fantastic and very helpful.

Great to see you here on the Australian thread too!!

Mommapilko. How's the weather in sunny Brisbane? My sister in law lives in Camira, anywhere near you? 4 layers and 4 to come - Wow,you'll have a good supply of nice fresh eggs. Good to meet you!(So to speak!)

Ducky,I had to tell you,I have just had a good telling off from a duck!! Where I have the ducks clam shell gets pretty warm in the afternoon, and the water is always warm in the evening when I go to change it. So I decided to move it so that it is under the shade. WELL, that was not a popular move,Sir Francis stood at the fence glared at me and let rip with some foul(haha)language! It was so obvious that he was telling me off for moving his pond

I am suitably chastised, but his pond stays where it is,and on last peek they were swimming happily in it! They are real characters! Sir F is getting green feathers on his head, and he walks very tall and straight. He is looking really good.

A few years ago I had a very stern talking to be a littel pekin named Yoshi. I had been away for a few days and when I got home- I sat down on the ground and she came up to my lap as normal- but then jumped up and was quacking away while biting me and pushing me with her bill. It was kind of scarey at first until she settled down after about a minute and promptly fell asleep in my lap. I kind of guessed she was saying How dare I leave her alone for so long and that i wasnt allowed to go on holidays ever again. Only people that have raised them can truely know just how much personality ducks really do have.

Next year I am taking off the days between Christmas and New Year. Being at work at this time of year when its so quiet is making the days drag and seem so terribly long. Its a gorgeous day outside- and I would much rather be at home in the garden and pottering around the house for 3 days than sitting at a desk.

Merry Christmas everyone

to all the newbies! If you weren't addicted to things with feathers before - you will be after spending time on this forum!
Mommapilko - thats how I started, with just 4 Brown Leghorn hens. They were just chooks that laid eggs until 2 went broody - and well . . . now I have a website and 45 chickens of varying ages and breeds with another 30 eggs under hens due to hatch in the next 2 weeks. It just kinda snowballs. So prepare yourself!
Ducky - hope the replacement car behaves for you until you can find the perfect ute, I've had nothing but car issues of late too and am now seriously considering going back to horse and cart! At least I know how to look after a horse, cars just baffle me.
My little Brick cat is almost all better, even though she was on antibiotics for a week she still ended up with an abscess on one of her back legs. My hubby said it looked like a gunshot wound it was such a big open deep hole, but its almost completely closed over now, hope she doesn't feel the need to get into anymore cat fights!
Well I have officially decided I am going to concentrate on breeding French Wheatan Marans and cross bred pets using a black sex-link method, so I can use my Maran roo over some Plymouth Rock hens. So in my breeding barn there will be 2/3 Maran hens, 1 Maran roo and 2/3 Plymouth Rock hens. I had originally decided not to keep a rooster due to the noise factor and my neighbour being super sensitive, but since I haven't spoken to her in over 3 months (because she didn't like where I put my new chicken house!) I think nows a good time to aquire a hansom young man

Isn't it funny how annoyed ducks/chickens get when you re-arrange their furniture! I had to move a large coop in the 7 week old chicks home to make room for the hen and babies due this saturday, and boy didn't they let me know they weren't impressed! I litterally had 14 little chicks in a picket line right where i needed to move it to, no way were they gonna let me put it there, so I distracted them by letting them out for a scratch with the big kids and they came back to the re-arrangement done.
