Hello, just posted in New Member Introductions.

I am the proud new owner of an Isa Brown and Australorp through rentachook.com.au.

Looking forward to learning more about chickens here.

chicken heat update = It's been stinking hot here too! Argh... Too hot to be outside doing anything with the animals. Last night we didn't get outside to do anything until around 7pm because it was just toooooo hot! Also the extreme fire danger rating for our area kept me watching the cfa website... *paranoid*

I've been happily suprised with the way my chooks, turkeys & duck have coped with this weather. They seem to have coped better than their two legged, un-feathered, human companions

and P.S - getting my very first cockerel tomorrow! A Barnevelder. Yay!

Hi Chickenmumma, Coming from Tassie at least we don't have the extreme heat that you have over there! However, you are on the right track, lots of cool water, shad,if not much shade around, heaps of shadecloth,my Japanese hens were suffering on the roost the other night, panting etc., so I just gave them a light spray with the mister, and it did seem to help. If the worst comes to the worst, put any that seem to be really suffering into a cage and bring them into a cool place, even if it is the house! Hope someone else can give you more suggestions!

It gets into the 40's here often in summer. I just make sure they have lots of water and shade. We have lots of huge gum trees on our property so that seems to work well. I tried putting the sprinkler on for them once and they were none to impressed with it running and screaming from it like I was trying to kill them lol.

Thank you Wooklet..I needed a laugh today...

Cooler here tomorrow- and just as well too- I have to take two ducks to work with me tomorrow. I have a fellow from Bendigo coming to pick up some ducks- and being school holidays....my daughter has plans so wont be home. I am so lucky to have the use of a large off street car park where I work so I often take duckies to work. My workmates get a kick out of seeing them too.

lightningsally trying before you buy can be a great way to work out of chooks really are for you. I hope it wont be too long before you start seeing some eggs from your new girls.

Satay chookn and Chickenmumma - good to hear from you and know that you are all surviving the summer as best you can.

As far as keeping them cool- putting a towel sheet or blanket over bushes or part of the coop depending on the size and keeping them wet through the day will help create a cooler breeze and give them somewhere cooler to sit. Watermelon is a good treat for a hot summer day too- or any fruit with a high water content. You could try putting it in the freezer for an hour before giving it to them- not so that its frozen solid- but just so that it will stay cool for a while once outside.

Yes gotta agree with Ducky on the frozen watermelon. Mine love it and it's so cheap here at the moment for a dollar you can buy a massive one that keeps my hens happy for days. I have done frozen grapes for them too before. We are just starting to get the heat wave from down south with temps over the next few days expected to be in the mid to high 40's. Yesterday we got to 39c. They only prob I have with the heat is going outside here. The sun burns you in not long at all. Thank god for the bore. Now if only i could convince hubby we need a pool too lol.

I would die! Sounds like you really need that pool!

My chickens would probably kill each other for watermelon - don't they love it? Just had to put this in although it's not chicken related. It would only be in Australia, that people wear water melon hats to keep cool-wonder what genius thought of that first??
