I have just returned home after a lovely day- So nice to have a day of work to start with- but It was so nice to finally meet wooklet and hear what she really thinks of our recent weather here in Victoria

Pity you arent closer as a friend of mine has just found out she has an excess of drakes. 5 drakes and 2 ducks in her youngest lot just sexed means she has a few to find homes for. Good luck with your search- It shouldnt be too difficult this time of year with many people now thinning out what they have bred over spring and summer.

I am the proud owner of some BEAUTIful new ducky runner girls-I have never seen as many beautiful ducks all together as I saw yesterday,and yes,it was so nice to finally meet up with Ducky,crazy weather and all! (Tassie is just as bad,so no arguements from anyone!) We seemed to have a bit to chat about! The girls travelled back to Tassie via the ferry,and caused great interest wherever we went. Must say I was very relieved to see them safe and happy when we got to Devonport! Look out showring-here we come! Will post pics soon,but haven't got my head together yet! I thought that I would keep them seperate from the 2 boys for a couple of days just to let them settle down,but they have all spent the day making eyes at each other through the fencing,so will probably let them run together tomorrow.

Wow, Sydney's a long way for an out-of-town visit! I guess when I think of 'out-of-town' from Adelaide, I'd imagine Hahndorf or something... maybe Robe/Kingston SE or Mount Gambier in a pinch... going to Sydney would be like me going to Austria and choosing Paris as my 'out-of-town' visit! I should try that, actually...

By the way, I went into Hahndorf today (homeschool concert in the old folk's home), I don't usually like that place as it's so touristy and busy, but it was almost normal today, quieter. My sister and I went into the sweet shop which we rarely do, they have everything there! One of my favourite things to do in Hahndorf is to pretend I'm a German tourist who doesn't speak any English. It's quite funny as no-one there actually speaks German, despite advertising themselves as "Australia's Oldest German Town" and putting lots of signs up in German around the place. Most of the time I give up and revert to English, though. I only know of one German-speaker in Hahndorf, he goes to my church and only came out from Germany three years ago... Anyway, since this probably makes no sense to those of you who don't live in paradise (aka Adelaide), I'll move on now.

I haven't had any new birds in a while, apart from the 3 quails which hatched last week. I'm keeping my eye out for some Sebright hens (yeah, I know, I'm dreaming), a barred Rock rooster, and a couple of others. Actually, I'm just keeping my eye out full stop. Which just sound weird. Oh, well. I'm also anxiously waiting for my Araucanas to start laying. They're about somewhere between 17 and 19 weeks now. Not very exact, I know. About what age should lavender Araucanas start laying, does anyone know? I'm guess about 23 or 24 weeks, but that's just a guesstimate based on other chooks I've kept.

Also, my sister's ducks of an unidentified breed (about 1.5 months old) are being kept in a pen right outside my schoolroom, and they're stinking the place out! I've been keeping my window closed and it's not helping, my schoolroom's only a tin shed anyway, it gets stinking hot enough during summer anyway. Oh, well, they'll be moving in with the chickens (who have a pond) soon. Maybe that's their problem, all they have at the moment is an old bath.

I'm finishing up now, but I'd like to take this opportunity (which I'm making and which isn't really there) to mention possibly the second-greatest invention in the world (after washing machines). It was invented by a South Aussie woman called Adelaide Miethke around 1948 and trialled from Port Augusta in 1950 before taken over by the Northern Territory, who claim to have started it in Alice Springs in 1951. Adelaide Miethke was part of the Royal Flying Doctor's Service, but she was actually a schoolteacher, and she was inspired by the pedal radio network. Has anyone guessed it yet?

Wooklet I was a little worried about you getting on board with your luggage and the ducks- so it was nice to hear you had been given a trolley to use- must have been much easier. I hope the girls didnt leave too much soggy shavings in the terminal, and that the dogs managed to get some sleep with the girls chattering away.

I have had some of mine on the training pens over the last two evenings- And I have one thats like to stand just like the younger girl you chose. The others wont take long to get used to it all though. What does Hubby think of the new additions wooklet?? I bet you were glad to get home and see all the beautiful Malays again.

When I was about your age Rachel I went to Noumea with my father- maybe I shouldnt have snuck some of the table wine with my dinner as I bumped into a fellow the next day at the resort who was surprised to hear me speak English .. Apparently I had spoken to him the night before and pretended to be dutch.

Ducky,I had to give up the trolley when we got to the metal screener,and there was still a way to walk,so this really big guy steps up,and carried them the rest of the way! Oh,they dropped sawdust all over the place

but as long as I didn't have to vacuum it up I wasn't worried !

And I think that it was the other way round with the dogs,I could hear one barking even on the higher decks! I will start training as soon as I have unpacked!!

One question,I notice that after they have been in their little pond,that their undercarriage is still wet-is this because they haven't got their full adult feathers yet?

Oh thanks Ducky that sweet of you. I have an add on farmstock and i have had many offers for mixed colours even though my add says white male runner or eggs.. Oh well. Will keep looking. Glad you made it home safely wooklet. You sound like you had your hands quite full there.

The other Aussie thread was more of a general chat one, but it died a while ago. I haven't seen guinea or Christie for a long time now.

We've been to all the little towns in SA already, and I feel that after I've been once and seen everything, then I don't really need to go again. Perhaps our tastes in destinations differ there.

My German exchange and her friends commented on how un-German Hahndorf is when we took them. Everyone picked chicken schnitzel at the hotel instead of any of the authentic German dishes, in keeping with the mood.

I'm doing Relay for Life this year with some of my buddies from school. I'm looking forward to it. e

Wooklet- they do tend to remain wet after swimming when younger - the younger ones here look exactly the same right now since they have had a swim just before I got home from work.

Satay did you try BYP as well- I havent looked at the noticeboard for a while- and usually only look at VIC but thats worth a try too. I was added to some facebook groups for poultry breeders in QLD a while ago- I can send you some links so you can ask to join to post there as well if you like.
