i was excited yesterday afternoon to find a runner egg in their pen. First one since i brought them home.

I had one surprise chick hatch yesterday morning, around ten. Which was really strange as it was only Day 20 (in fact, late Day 19) of incubation! Anyway, Worm is doing quite well and is very noisy for such a tiny chick. Yes, it's being called 'Worm', because that's what the early bird gets, right? I have two more eggs zipping now and several have pipped.

IamSamSam thanks for putting up those photos- I know its a very long shot- but in the second group you have two ducks and a turkey- I was wondering if you knew what breed the second duck was entered as? It looks very much like one of my juvenile birds not yet fully molted. I might ser if I can get some info on what was entered to work it out- but just on the off chance... do you remember??

I think it was an Indian runner. Hope this helps, but its vague recollection and seems to keep coming back to it .... sorry I cant be of more help.

Hi Australians and NZers,

I'm new to the forum and looking for some advice on a good place or two in NSW to get chicks or pullets. I am hoping to get just six birds for my backyard, and interested in orpingtons, marans and auracanas. I would ideally like to get them all in one trip, if at all possible. I will be in Sydney, but willing to drive a few hours in any direction.

HI esque. Welcome to the Aussie thread. Being that I am a qlder i wont of much use when it comes to where you can get the hens. You could try farmstock they have people selling from all over Australia..

you can get good chicks to point of lay chooks from http://www.barterandsons.com.au BUT not the type your after. (I recommend these guys because they deliver my food bedding and other needs like wormer ! )

If I were you and you really want those breeds... I'd contact the breed associations.

Unfortunately only three chicks ended up hatching, which was a bit disappointing, especially as one died a few hours after hatching and one died at three days. But Worm is still doing very well and is in fact cheeping very loudly right in my ear right now (standing on my shoulder). I picked up a couple a chicks from the local grain & fodder shop on Saturday to keep her company.

Also, I got a new fence yesterday! We've been meaning to build one for a while but the tradesman came yesterday and built it - a great big wooden and wire structure across the yard. The chickens will be moving today or tomorrow, or the weekend at the latest. They're getting annoyed with the small pens they're all in at the moment. The new enclosure/run is about 30 metres by 15 metres with some shrubbery and trees and a pond in the middle (my sister's ducks will be sharing the area). Three and a half sides were already fenced but the other just had the house there, and my parents didn't want ducks or chickens coming right up onto the verandah, so the fence is there to stop them doing that.
