Australorps breed Thread

MY Aussies had started popping out eggs at around 4 months old, now they are 5 months old & after going through the winter they started laying such large eggs it worries me ,since they have been laying almost goose size eggs & since a wile back we had a year old NHR that prolapsed from laying such large eggs , but no worries she is doing great now, so it worries me to see our 5 month old Aussies producing such large almost gooses size eggs & at such a young age..??? so thats what i have to report about our experience with our Aussie Girls so far , but still they are the best ever breed of chicken ..!! fun & friendly , such happy beautiful hens with shiny feathers that shimmer green blue & purple & they sure can lay the eggs, so what else could any one ask for..????

How Sweet!

Australorps rarely have egg laying problems. They are a nice balance between hybrids for laying and health.

Enjoy those large eggs!

Lucky you! I'm still waiting on store size or 60g eggs from mine. Though must admit I think my 12 month old australorp has finally got there, or had before she went broody duh

The rest of my flock give me about a 50g egg on a good day.

Gachooks,
Your cockerel looks fine in conformation with the exception of the two tail feathers sticking up that are not a 40 degree angle. The same problem that everyone else is fighting. He is nice and broad and has a good chest along with nice hooks and legs. The comb is a minor fault with alot of points with five prefered but not worth sweating. All in all nice dark eyes and a good amount of red face.
That IMO which does not mean alot, it is up to a judge on a particular day!

Wouldn't people just pluck the two wayward feathers for comp or is that a no no?

If I remember the standard for chickens correctly chickens you can pull some feathers so long as it's unnoticeable. If it's pigeons it's a no no. Pigeons have to have so many tail feathers to their breed standard.

I have a date for when our baby chickies will be arriving - two Australorps, along with two Speckled Sussexes and two Barred Rocks will be arriving here in Central Florida on the 19th of February ... I can't wait! Will post photos!

Here's several of the 25 BAs that hatched 2/8/16 & arrived here this am. All arrived healthy, bouncy, thirsty & hungry after their day & a half journey. They seem quite content in their brooder coop ;-) LOVE <3
