Australorps breed Thread

Yes ceramic heat emitter. They are really cool less wattage required for the same heat and no obnoxious light at night. It just screws into the fixture like a regular bulb too so no extra

Just be aware they can't be used in a regular plastic light fitting. It has to be a ceramic one otherwise they can melt and catch fire.

This is true. I used them for my reptiles all the time so I guess I did not think to add that info to thepost.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'd hate if someone read that and tried it out then caught something on fire.

We have 46 Australorps and they are the sweetest chickens.  I can reach right under them in the nest box and they will never peck me.  They may complain loudly, but these girls are great chickens to have around a family.  We've not had a single mean one.  They also lay every day--all different shades of beautiful brown eggs--large ones--and we often find double yolks.  They are happy, healthy birds.

Welcome to BYC & the Australorp Thread :welcome

I have 22 BAs that are just over 9 weeks old - hatched 2/8/16. I initially brooded them in an unheated house with a "Mama Heatiing Pad". I turned them out into their partially covered pen when they were 3 weeks old at the beginning of March and were fully feathered. They had the MHP available but mostly just stood on top of it. I took the MHP away a couple of weeks ago as they never used it anymore. I am thoroughly enjoying them. They are all pretty friendly and will eat out of my hand. I'm sure I have 2 and possibly 3 little Roos. The rest appear to be Pullets :yiipchick I will be sharing them with my pastor & his family next door once they are able to get their coop/run built :) LOVE my chickens!

Is early tail feather development a give away for being a hen? I ask because out of my 9 I have 4 that's growing feathers, especially tail feathers at I much more rapped rate.

But not necessarily. My 2 from Ideal in 2012 grew at different rates, both are nearly 4 year old hens now, one is just a lot bigger than all the other girls. But she IS a BA, pink foot bottoms, grey legs.

My silly girls have started laying at last I think (it's Autumn her so think that slowed them down) but they are just dropping them where they are at the time as I'm finding them around the yard. I think it may be that they aren't brave enough to go into our fully enclosed nesting box. Our year older Australorp is always chasing them when she gets near them. Maybe they aren't game to go in there?

if they have never went in ...they may not know what it is for ...Show them eggs in there so they get the idea .
Do you just have 1 nesting box ?
