Hello there! Brand new chicken owner here in mid-coast Maine with 25 Black Australorps (and one suspected dark brahma) who are now 2 weeks old....I'm having so much fun!!

That is one good looking professional brooder. Did you order the mystery chick or did they just throw him or her in? I was wondering where your chooks came from and if they were straight run or sexed. They look very healthy and happy!

Thanks RattlesnakeRidgeWV! They're from Murray hatchery....all supposed to be female with only one male. I did check the box for the free exotic chick but not sure I'll be doing that again in the future. I'm guessing the mystery chick is male (seems logical plus very slow in feathering) and I'm somewhat sure of one male (only one with absolutely no tail feathers yet and I'm already seeing a comb). We lost one chick first day (had a dried mass at the umbilical cord) but the rest are doing extremely well. These girls are to be mainly our egg flock for our large family (11). Roo will stay if we like him, LOL. Meat birds planned for the summer....still haven't decided on breed yet.

LOL....Yeah, he's pretty easy to pick out!! My kids have named him "Q" because the girls are the black ops and the roo will be called James Bond.

The "mystery" chick looks like it has the color pattern of a auto sexing breed, like a Beilefelder of something similar.(I know that they don't sell Beiles but as an example)

A lot or Easter Eggers have that same chipmunk pattern also, God knows with all the differnt breeds.Time will tell if you do the research.

We're thinking it's a dark brahma....mainly because of what I call the chipmunk stripes and his feathered legs. And male simply because they're sold out of females as far out as you can find on their calendars, LOL. They're gorgeous birds....but HUGE and I'm not sure how he'll do with my smaller ladies (funny to think of BA's as smaller!).
