Australorps breed Thread

They are cute. Any early indicators to determine gender of the blue australorps? Or do I have to wait until their combs develop?
Same as the Blacks, you will know by the 5th to 7th week who is who for sure. The light colored chick may be a splash. Looks like one of my young splashes. Who is the breeder of the blues and splashes up in your neck of the woods?

That feels like I'll have to wait forever!
There are not many breeders of australorps here in Nova Scotia, but there is a fellow outside of Truro, NS, who has a small flock of only australorps. He is more of an enthusiast than a breeder, I suppose. He brought is rooster (a black australorp) in from British Columbia and has maybe 15 blue and black australorp hens.

I understood that you could only produce a splash if you had two blue parents? They are light though. Am excited to see how they turn out.

You are correct about needing 2 blues or a splash and a blue to make a splash. That could also be a light blue that people call a lavender, but it would really be a self blue which would be all the same shade of light blue with no lacing.

Some pics I got today while moving 7.5 week old chicks to the new coop. Sorry for any blurriness....they are awfully hard to photograph!!

Australorp cockerel in the middle there. Although he wasn't the biggest chick for the first few weeks, he's definitely bulking up now...

And a good shot of a pullet on the right. Also interesting to see how much SMALLER the dark brahma is...he's also still not fully feathered.

And here's the whole lot enjoying their new digs:

Yes, I kept the heater in there mainly for the brahma....We're hovering near 50 at night. Coop is still a work in progress....Loving my sweet australorps!!

Nine weeks old now and spunky as ever. I need to weigh them again, some are getting pretty big. They decimated all the green stuff in their pen about 4 weeks ago so been getting any weeds and kitchen scraps available, but its getting really dry here now and most everything is dead except the wild mustard growing in the shade.
