Australorps breed Thread

A couple of my pullets are quite large and also have a comb developing (although not as large or red). The main way I could tell this guy was a cockerel was in comparing the feathering out process....his tail is STILL shorter than all the girls and his wing feathers took FOREVER to come in. That combined with the comb size and color (his is much redder) and development of his wattles before any girls led me to my conclusion. It seems like it would be a LOT harder to sex at this age if you don't have much to compare to....but I have 24 other birds for comparison, LOL. I do have one large pullet that may still turn out to be a cockerel....she developed her comb fairly early but also feathered out with the rest of the girls. I'm thinking she may just be the "top diva."

Thank you, that makes me feel a little more confident that maybe my chicks are pullets, because I really didn't notice any differences between the three as to how their feathers came in! And nobody has wattles yet, although I'm starting to see where they are going to be.

The two larger chicks (Goldie & Tipper) have larger combs than the other, smaller one (Cheeks) but that's about it, and Cheeks might be from a later hatching, so might be a little younger. Who knows?

I'm crossing my fingers, I'm kind of attached to Goldie in particular, she's pretty friendly, and calm enough to hold easily.

First BA's for me. I adore them and they're freakishly clean and very friendly. Maybe due to my helicopter parenting from the start?? Any weigh-ins on gender due to feathering? Their combs don't look pink at all and no wattles yet. Their hatch date was March 28. We just love them and named them Harriet, Wanda and Elda after three of our passed on Grandmas. Trying to will them into pullets!!

Nice little set up, there! If you go only by feather growth, then the tails say that the one on the left is a cockerel and the other two are pullets. Some closer pictures would help, though.

I created a thread & posted some pictures in the 'what breed/gender' forum, if you have time to take a look at my 'girls', that would be awesome!

Thanks Cactus! Here's some better pictures of the girls. The one I'm thinking might be a cockerel is "Harriet" with the speckled head. She doesn't have near the head and neck feathering, holds her tail down more than the other two (is that a thing?) and always stands a lot taller and stretches up higher. She was always the biggest. Everyone has the same color comb though. The one on the left in the original picture isn't Harriet though.
