Australorps breed Thread

Keep us updated as they grow!

So far there are no indicators of the chick being a cockerel. Saddle and hackle feathers come much later. Red comb and wattles start at about 6 weeks old.

Slow and fast feathering genes are not linked to gender in australorps. That only happens if you cross breeds that have feathering linked to gender for either the male or female.

Yours are not crosses so the feather growth rate is moot.

I feather sexed the batch of 25 straight run hatchery birds I got at about 2 weeks, by tail and wings, and was 100% accurate. Maybe it depends on your source.

Sometimes you get Lucky!

It is not sex linked so do not sell them to people based on feather growth. Customers will be upset when they get roosters

Otherwise it is harmless fun

That's how I'm looking at it Ronott1.....just for fun! But I'm not in a situation where it REALLY matters (not selling any and no restrictions)...I'm OK with a few mistaken cockerels. Any that are mean (or just plain annoying) will just be sent to the pot!

That is how I work too. I do not sell much but when I do, I do not let them leave until I am sure. I have 14 Pita Pinta and Delaware chicks that are 2.5 weeks old. I am hoping to get 6 pullets but will not let them go to the new owners until 6 weeks old or so
