Australorps breed Thread

Lucky girl to be out on grass! Ours will be in the coop for another week (to make sure they understand it's home now) before getting outside. One of the disadvantages of the north...

Some pics I got today while moving 7.5 week old chicks to the new coop. Sorry for any blurriness....they are awfully hard to photograph!!

Australorp cockerel in the middle there. Although he wasn't the biggest chick for the first few weeks, he's definitely bulking up now...

And a good shot of a pullet on the right. Also interesting to see how much SMALLER the dark brahma is...he's also still not fully feathered.

And here's the whole lot enjoying their new digs:

Yes, I kept the heater in there mainly for the brahma....We're hovering near 50 at night. Coop is still a work in progress....Loving my sweet australorps!!

Oh, lordy... your cockerel there looks an awful lot like 2 out of the 3 (supposedly 90% sexed to be pullets) 6-week old chicks I have in my three bird, no roosters allowed, backyard flock!

I keep telling myself to give it time, 'cause I can't tell!

Nice looking birds, and yes, the brahma looks tiny in there!

A couple of my pullets are quite large and also have a comb developing (although not as large or red). The main way I could tell this guy was a cockerel was in comparing the feathering out process....his tail is STILL shorter than all the girls and his wing feathers took FOREVER to come in. That combined with the comb size and color (his is much redder) and development of his wattles before any girls led me to my conclusion. It seems like it would be a LOT harder to sex at this age if you don't have much to compare to....but I have 24 other birds for comparison, LOL. I do have one large pullet that may still turn out to be a cockerel....she developed her comb fairly early but also feathered out with the rest of the girls. I'm thinking she may just be the "top diva."
