Australorps breed Thread

Hi again, Aveca.
I'd use him if I didn't have more options. If Bill can get a BA from a Buff Orp., mine should be a minor problem! Worried about the possible effect on sheen though. Probably still got
around 25 boys to select from, half of which are too young for fine judgement. They're such gawky 'teenagers' and it's hard to judge back 'curve' at this stage as it's a feather thing. I've bumped off a few cockerels this year and none of 'em had curved backs!
Cheers Geoff

Thats what I was thinking..Im a glass half full kind of person..can it be worked out..If you have 25 to choose from..thats even better..

Hi Aveca,
the pic comes from an old edition of the handbook of the Langshan Club of Australia. You may remember that I bred standard black Aussie Langies many years ago and currently breed black bantams. The old edition had some articles on the BA because of their common heritage. I copied all the relevant articles and posted them here a while ago. You might like to revisit them and let me know if any of them are 'unreadable'. There is a new edition of the handbook but I'm not sure if it contains all the old stuff.
Cheers Geoff

Hi folks,
interesting and authoritative comments on the BA in a commercial context, where it is specifically noted as having a temperament etc. " ideal for freerange". It's mentioned a number of times as the terrific breed for freerange conditions. Nice to have our breed promoted in this way by the 'Eggheads'! See poultryhub HOME > TRAINER"S MANUAL > EGG PRODUCTION - UNIT 6.
Cheers Geoff

Very interested in reading it Geoff, I remember you posted the langshan pages too...Maybe someday each breed section could have a learning center like a page that stays up top where breeders could look up information..important stuff...maybe on your profile page where people could go look at the info.... One day I found a solid brown feather on my australorp rooster..just one and it was like brown leghorn brown, not really red ..it was a solid color..on the body ..then I found a solid white feather..At the time I thought where on earth did that come from..this is a very old line of australorp...so I have yet to see it in the offspring..Ive been looking..so it makes sence now..

I know that when we bred Sumatras every couple years you should use a cock that has the redish feathers( very few of them) to retain the sheen.

Interesting Cuba,
I was hoping you'd have a crack at identifying what's 'wrong' with the 2 cockerel heads I posted. I have huge respect for your knowledge and understanding and if you're to be one of America's finest judges in the future, it's the fine detail that needs a good handle.
Cheers Geoff

I completely agree that we need permanent breed threads with the info. that doesn't date. For a newbie on here, for instance, there's a lot of discussion of only 'temporary' interest to wade through to get to the more informative bits. At least BYC threads don't keep moving all over the place like our BYP(oultry) ones do! I guess we really need thread editors, who can move the 'permanent' stuff to a dedicated thread attached to this one, somehow. Anyone got any influence with BYC supremos?
Cheers Geoff
