Australorps breed Thread

Sounds like a really good project. Love seeing the pictures. the brown chick looks different in the face than lot of baby australorps I see. its really interesting. I hope you keep us posted on it. I am also adding orpington now and again to my stock. In my case I have to be careful because it is very strict that a tight feather be kept on the breed for showing, there are so many details arnt there?
I hope you post more pics of your stock, I for one would love to see them.

Heres a tip for you when breeding the big and smaller birds togather, smaller breed roosters over big hens, Ray connor , wrote a book called the australorp, he is 17 time world champion breeder, he plucks the feathers around vent area befor breeding season. and a rooster that is too big cannot properly cover the females. neither can a rooster that is too small for big orp hens. so australorp rooster over orp hens seems to work well.
He also recomended several weeks befor breeding season to add greens , like spinach cut up, or carrot tops, stuff like that . The commercial feeds have a lot of soybean maybe too much and not much green stuff . He has been working inside of his same flock for over 30 years and every year lots of greens during the season gives really robust breeding birds and healthy chicks.that from his experience. Its a good read for both amature and expert alike, both learn something from this book

Thanks, I'll look for that book. I do need to trim my rooster. But right now he is about to go to several shows so I can't. Thought about AI but I'm not serious enough to go there. My main focus is orpingtons at this point, but I love the australorps and when my daughter shows them at the fair we always have people wanting to buy them. We won't sell but was hoping to have a few more like them to add to our laying flock. I think I will just keep the girls I have in the laying flock and end it there, not sure what I'm going to do with big brown if it turns out to be a boy! What I need are some black orp pullets for the black roo then I will know whether it is the roo that is throwing this color or not.

Thanks for all your advice
Carolyn

When it comes to feeding chickens, you may also wish to look for a book by a man named Charles Weeks. Its called, "Egg Farming In California."
Its online as a download.

Thanks for the tip on that book , will have to look for it.

I LOVE the orpingtons.. I really like the black orps..Big fluff balls.. One of the nicest chickens to keep.

I have had hatchery Australorps and like them a lot.

I was thinking of trying out some breeder quality Australorps, but I don't know if there is anybody near NE Oklahoma who is an Australorp breeder. Anybody out there?

Also, my hatchery Australorps are nice, pretty birds and great layers. Do the breeder quality birds trade looks for laying ability, or are they pretty and good layers too?

I'm not looking to breed any birds myself, and I've never hatched eggs and don't have an incubator. Young chicks is what I'm after.

Hey Neil,
I don't know of any breeders in your area, but I don't know many breeders, so that dosen't say a lot!! I just wanted to suggest that you check with your states thread in the Where am I , where are you thread. Also , look for swaps in your area in the shows, swaps thread for locals and P.M. some of the folks that seem to be in the know? Best of luck to you, I have about the same problem so have decided to order eggs and hatch my own. .......stan
