Australorps breed Thread

I have a question & I hope it does not offend anyone. I have several Roosters and was wondering at what age/weight do most of you start sending them to freezer camp.

Do you feed them off any special way? Used to help process chickens at home as a kid but that has been a Looooonnnng time ago!

Between 16 and 24 weeks. Over that and they will get tougher. Someone on a different thread said that the increase in weight after that age does not warrant the feed costs.

The traditional fee for finishing is milk soaked corn scratch for two weeks. They are supposed to gain two pounds in that time.

That is a boy. I love his comb!
I forgot to say, the tail is wrong. Could he be crossed with a Black Penedesenca? The tail is set too high and it should not fan out like that.

Ron, you care to go into a little detail in the 2 week feed off? How much corn starch & milk to you mix and how many times a day do you offer it? How much?

I put the two I was going to process into a large pet kennel. I soaked the scratch in milk overnight and fed it to them each morning and night. A couple of times I gave them Grower in the evening because I did not have enough soaked scratch ready. They preferred the soaked scratch.

The Bresse had a nice layer of fat inside the cavity and the Livers looked like this:

Brie,
A cockerel for sure, and the tail is a squirrel tail not preferred. The tail is supposed to be at an angle of 40% off of the back not 90%. If you are not showing and planning on breeding then it really does not matter. Nice comb though.
