Australorps breed Thread

Nice BA's RoseMarie1. I found it interesting as well that one of my BA pullets began developing her waddles weeks ahead of her same age pullet pal. Even now her face is more red but her pal is now beginning to catch up. They are 15 weeks old. My how time flies. Anyway, do you crush their raw garlic or feed them whole cloves? I know garlic aids the immune system but curious your reasons if you do not mind sharing. You can PM me if you would rather. Thanks. ~Dee~

Hi Dee, no I don't mind sharing. The mosquitoes are so bad here I thought it just MIGHT help them to stay away from my chicks because of the smell of the garlic. I give them TWO WHOLE bulbs that I cut up into small pieces. I've been giving it to them for about 5-6 days now so their skin should really reek of garlic smell. lol or that's my thinking anyway. I have 38 chicks so it takes some amount of food to feed the little boogers. I have two hanging soap deals that I use for this idea.

This is HOW I do the garlic...... found this awesome idea on the internet back in the fall when I was going to ferment some garlic for us. Take 2 stainless steal bowls about the same size, separate the garlic so you have the garlic toes. Put them into one of the bowls and put the other bowl over it and shake the devil out of it. I always have a paper towel on the cabinet and I just take each one out that has lost their husks as I shake and then shake some more. Shake really hard and check to see how many you have that's peeled for you. Just keep repeating until they're all done. so easy and good exercise to! lol This is AWESOME when you have a bunch to peel.
Thanx Dee!

That is so weird isn't it that they don't develop at the same pace.

Garlic will get into the eggs so do not give them too much when they start laying. The same goes for fishmeal--not too much or the eggs will taste fishy.

A little bit is good for them however.

Thanx Ron!! I just put out two whole bulbs for them and they have it consumed in less than 5 minutes. I keep calling them my lil pigs.

I hope I don't trip and fall in there one day cuz they just might try to eat me to.

Rosemarie,
All of your birds with red waddles and combs at 12 weeks are cockerels. At twelve weeks all my pullets have blackish or blackish yellow very short combs, or just turning pinkish but very small. Blow up the pics on my profile at 12 weeks and you can tell who are the cockerels for sure.Hope this helps.

If my DH didn't hate it I'd add garlic to my diet. The mosquitoes LOVE to bite me. Neat tip to peel a lot of garlic at once. Wow! Feeding 38 chicks must be interesting to say the least. You came up with a neat solution with your hanging holders and all. Thanks so much for sharing. ~Dee~

oh OK I got it now! Man kind I got A LOT of cockerels! I will only have 9-10 pullets out of 22 BA's. Trying to figure it out because someone is wanting the ones I get rid of and that would help me be able to spend more time with the others to get them more tame.
THANK YOU Kurt!!!

No matter how much I feed them they always act like they haven't eaten in days. I am fermenting their food to and you talk about a hoot, now THAT is a hoot! They dearly LOVE the stuff and when they're out free ranging and I bring that bucket, lets just say it's mega hard to get IN the door without some of them coming IN with me!

TRY putting fermented food in a vinyl gutter that has poultry wire over it to keep the lil pigs out of it with 38 chicks trying to take a bite outta each scoop you put in there.

I started putting part of a scoop out in something else to distract them and then I can get it in their trough.

oh I dearly LOVE the stuff and am SO GLAD my DH loves it to or we'd be in trouble.

You can't put too much in a dish for me, the more the better. Sorry you're hubby doesn't like it. :(

I like garlic too--but not for the eggs in my french toast or cake batter.
