Australorps breed Thread

Oh dear,
I hope it wasn't my explanation that offended Rosemarie, if so, I apologise. More likely Ross's 'duck waddle' comment. Sometimes our Aussie sense of humour doesn't translate and even causes offense on here as I've discovered at times. It's just an amusing image and I'm positive that Ross was not meaning to belittle. We really try to support newbies on here. There was a time when we all couldn't tell a hackle from a handbrake! If you're still reading, Rosemarie, please reconsider as Ross is a terrific teacher.
Regards from Aus Geoff

Quote: Please Rose Marie1 don't go away. I totally understand health issues affecting memory, etc. because I have them in spades. I probably said "waddles" myself as I can get confused at times. I am sure no one meant to hurt your feelings or make you feel like you were being bullied. I have enjoyed your presence here and do hope you will reconsider.

Hello Geoff.

I was happy to see you are back now. I am sorry to hear you lost both of your parents. That is really tough. I lost my dad last Oct. and I still can't believe he is gone.

I really enjoyed looking at your pics of your BA's. They are truly beautiful. I hope things go really well with your new breeding program.

~Dee~

Thanks Dee,
glad you enjoyed my overexposed pics. Thanks for supporting both Rose Marie and Ross. We don't want to lose anybody over a simple misunderstanding. I've been there and I've never meant to offend anyone, well, maybe one. I'm sure Ross and maybe Aveca, are gonna be mortified that they may have inadvertently caused offense.
Regards Geoff

Back to BA's,
a query for longer term BA breeders. I visit as many breeders as I can, as well as shows, as I want to see how my birds are going compared with show quality birds. Although I've kept and bred chooks for many years, this is my first attempt at establishing a decent line. I've never managed to get a long term breeding program going with any breed due to being 'outfoxed' each time I got going. This is a longwinded way of saying that I have no experience in establishing a line - obsessively learning though! Some lines I've seen have really black beaks, whereas mine tend to fade towards the end of the beak. I like the look of the blacker beaks and they conform to our SOP, but neither of the lines I've blended have 'em. From memory (MUST order a new 'bible' to replace the one I sent Cuba ages ago!), I need to breed from some birds with a bit of black speckle on the sole of the feet. Do these crop up regularly in established lines? If not, do I have to import different blood? Rather not.
Cheers Geoff

Rosemarie1 , dont be upset...I think Ross just want to say it was incorrect term for wattle..I dont think he meant any disrespect or insult to you....just said it like...you might want to call it a wattle...dont take any offence, he didnt mean any..just trying to help..I have done things like that myself so dont be upset..I think I called them waddles once too..

I did unsubscribe from this but it didn't unsubscribe me. Don't know WHAT happened because I came back to try and find the thread to resubscribe and apologize to you all......as well as Ross on here......and there it was still on here.

I am SO SORRY you guys ..... I did take Ross wrong. He did not mean that the way I took it...... I told him so as well because he messaged me telling me he was sorry that he wasn't making fun. I feel so bad that I took him wrong and if I hadn't been so worn out last night that might not have happened. I feel totally horrible that I said what I did and would like you all to forgive me for being ugly and taking it wrong.

I am new to raising chickens and am trying so hard to learn and I really need to get rid of some of these chickens because I have wayyyyy too many. (38) This is why I was trying to figure out how to tell the pullets from the cockerels because I have someone that wants all of them I want to sell them. But I'd like to keep all my pullets and only a couple of the BA cockerels.

PLEASE Ross except my apology, because I truly am sorry I took you wrong.
ALSO thank you all for coming to Ross' defense because it was me in the wrong!

Thanks ..The bowls are 5 ...They were made for people to eat out of ....I think they were .50 ..I bought them for popcorn bowls ..
They also work good for picking vegetables / berries
Maybe yours is wetter than mine ? Do you drain it any ? I was doing that for a while ..
Then I decided to just take out the top rising ..if it is too moist I add a little feed to it .
Yes, I do drain it for awhile in a small holed Tupperware colander before spreading it out on the glass plate. My DH found a plant pot that the plate fits perfect in and he stabilized it with rocks inside as it was fairly light. Didn't want them to knock it over. He got the idea from my water set up I made with a plant pot & glass bowl very similar. I like this system as I can easily clean it all daily avoiding any mold as I explained earlier. (NW wet marine climate). Below is a pic I took to share with you. I have it set under an old plastic table for shade protection.

My BA's are getting so big and pretty. 15 weeks old ~Dee~

Dee,
Forgive me if you have already said this, but what are they eating? Do you free feed or feed a few times a day?
You said pacific nw weather ... Are you perhaps in Washington? Trying to see which bird breeds do well up here, before I get my heart set on one breed that doesn't do well up here. :)

Dee you ferment their food to? Mine are also huge and tomorrow they will be 3 months old. Folks that see them cannot believe they are only 3 months old because they look like grown chickens already.
