Australorps breed Thread

Thank you All. Counting points really had me baffled

Is anyone on this thread a Judge ?? Maybe they could lend their thoughts on the blade question.

Send a picture by pm to fowlman01. He is a Poultry Judge on BYC.

I would say 5 pts, but some would count the little one at the rear to make it 6pts. There is some discretion by the judge in counting them so some will count anything that looks like a point.........but the reality is that it does not matter unless the judge is looking for a reason to put one bird over another.

Not really. The Hupp birds are very large by 18 weeks so they have plenty of ability to lay eggs.

The problems come with the hybrids that lay 300 plus eggs a year.

Contrary to the propaganda, BAs lay less than 300 per year.
ah ha..... less than 300....
yeah I was wondering about their health to Dee, that's why I was going to be OR try to be patient about them laying

This is one of my Australorp males. I have around 30 birds in this breed and rate them as one of the best breeds for backyard breeders.

Mated to a Cornish Game they produce a very usefull table bird and the pul;lets lay very well. Broodiness is doubled using this mating and they are very good sitters and mothers.

All they need to do now is fatten up and grow into their feathers. Winter will tell me who to breed next year or cull.
Kurt

They look Great Kurt! Maybe someday but for now I am staying all Black. I figure one thing at a time for a Newbie breeder like myself.

Interesting what you shared about the Hupp birds being very large at 18 weeks. I am wondering how mine will compare in size. They are approaching the same size as my 7 lb. adult Barr Rock hen at this point in time. (16 weeks old)

I have noticed Peppa is taking oyster shell out of my layer, Betsy Barr Rock, sole supply. Would you stop her from doing that or not?
