Australorps breed Thread

Is that terminology literal? I would not want to experience that!

I have read stories of prolapsed uterus/vent. Would that be the same? ~Dee~

Yes, that is what it is called. They do not just have prolapse though. They also have other failures that cause eggs without shells that break and cause peritonitis. That is another danger of laying more eggs than they should.

Not really. The Hupp birds are very large by 18 weeks so they have plenty of ability to lay eggs.

The problems come with the hybrids that lay 300 plus eggs a year.

Contrary to the propaganda, BAs lay less than 300 per year.

Ron, Can you give me a weight on your Hupp pullets at 18 weeks?

I pulled the Blue girl out of the Tractor Brooder and weighed her this morning. She weighs 4pounds 6 ounces at 19 weeks old. I can't weigh the boys because they are at the egg farm but my guess is that they weigh at least 2 pounds more.

Blue girl last week:

They also have nice width to them.

Ron, I will weigh one of my Gilbert girls in 2 weeks they will be close to 19 weeks old. Just wanted to see how they compare size wise to the Hupp birds. I'll be hatching Black Hupp eggs in late Sept.
