Australorps breed Thread

Well they are still young, but are turning out quite impressive. Many times crossing lines leads to birds with less than desirable traits. But these prove, as well as their 50 siblings that their parents made a pretty good match. Father was a Gilbert bird, mother a distant Sherman bird. They have great size, and type is pretty decent. I'll try to get a bigger picture.
Interested to see more pics! The pullets I have are linebred Gilbert. I have one cockerel that goes back to Sherman lines & my other cockerels are out of Gilberts hens & an Aker Roo, both Akers & Gilberts birds go back to primarily Kirk Keene's line of BA's.

I am going to try and hatch a few Hupp BA's soon.

I already have birds enough to try some interesting crosses. I am looking forward to it. It is just a Fun Project for me.

On another note the Australorp Condo is complete and I should get pictures took and posted in the next few days.

First egg this AM from one of my BA's.
It was kind of funny how it happened. I had just fed the girls some raw sunflower seeds on the dirt patch behind their covered dust bath area which is my usual routine. Then I go over to the coop to clean it up. While I was doing that I heard Betsy Barr Rock doing her curious talk so I turned to see what she was investigating. All three of my girls were examining something laying on the dirt so I went over to find out what was so interesting. Lo and behold! There was a small brown egg in the dirt.

Here is a pic comparing it with one of Betsy's jumbo size eggs. It is about the size of a walnut. But so beautiful!

Thanks all for your replies. So nice to hear from you.

Me too, Ron. I had noticed on the coop floor some nest like formations in the pine shavings the past few days so I knew it was coming up.

It would be great to have her use a nest box for sure. Maybe since it was so small she just sort of let it fall out on the dirt not realizing she was laying an egg. LOL

My BA's turned 20 weeks old last Friday, Dianne88.
I think I will go out again to see if my other BA is nesting or ? I am so excited one of them is laying now at least.

Congrats Dee, may they find the nest box soon. Most do, but it may take some time. Fake eggs in the nest box works wonders. If they are with Betsy they will get the idea faster by watching a wiser hen!!!

LOL congrats!!! I KNOWWW you are excited just as excited as I will be to find MY very first chicken egg. My BA's are 4 months old today.
Do we need to put the fake eggs in the nests even when they're not laying yet so they can get used to them being in the nests?
