Australorps breed Thread

Quote: So true Ron, so true. Later when I went back she was much nicer. Guess I just haven't came upon her at that exact pressing time of duty lately. She does keep me giggling.
Hand fed the girls some chard today. The leaves are getting tougher as the temperatures become colder. I am not looking forward to winter. Oh well. ~Dee~

Thank you Dee for that idea with the gloves! UGH WHY haven't I thought about that? Mine pinches my skin on my hands to when they feed from my hands. OR did when they were younger because I haven't done it for a long while now. Don't know IF they would even let me now. I stopped because they'd break the skin every time eating from my hand. My skin is sooo thin now. :(

I NEED to plant some turnips for mine but haven't yet. I did plant them some clover and some rye grass. Bought some more rye grass seeds today to plant inside their run in the grazing frames.
Going to have to get out my gloves!

Was going to put up some PVC pipe over the run tomorrow if I am able to so I can put a tarp over it and it wont hold water. Going to arch it a bit so the water will roll off and snow IF we have any which I hope we don't have. So maybe while I am out there doing that I can get one to eat some scratch out of my hand. Will see anyway.

Does anyone else have aggressive australorps? Mine like people...up to a point, but they torment my other chickens, especially the lonely welsummer pullet. In fact, everyone picks on her; she's at the bottom, very bottom, of the pecking order.

Both the Cackle hatchery pullets and the Hupp Australorps are friendly to other breeds. They do not attack and are not attacked.

The Hupp Australorps take a bit more interest in me. The Hatchery Australorps are a bit stand offish.

My hatchery australorp is a sweetie. She does not go out of her way to be friendly but is less scared of most things than others so easier to pick up. Once picked up is happy to hang out. She's good with the other breed pullets that I have. Solidly middle in ranking.

yep same here on the stand offish. Although mine WILL stand their ground when they need to with the RIR's. I have seen them really peck the dog out of some of the hens at the feeding trough. They sort of hang together to I have noticed. But there is one that will hang with the rir's.

It is one of the things I like about them. They are not too needy and they do not startle too easily.

I have Penedesencas and oh my do they startle!

yeah don't like them freaking out about everything so I'm glad they aren't too bad about it. Although the other day when I was putting up that black bisqueen plastic on the north wall I really had their attention. It was too close to their roosting area and they were going to roost. I had just gotten home and fed them and had let them out to free range a bit. Was putting that up while they made their way back into the pen and that didn't like that plastic at all. Some were on the roost and they dove off it. Had to chuckle at all the noise they were making so I started talking to all of them to calm them some since it NEEDED to be put up to block that north wind off them. Most all that wall is closed in with tin but not that small area. So it's all fixed up for them now.
