Australorps breed Thread

Love this breed...they are so pretty with their black and green combination. My rooster is beautiful and absolutely huge. He is twice the size in height of my females and has gorgeous gold crowning. Will post picture in future to prove he is the most handsome bird in my opinion.

8 weeks old now and all looking "henish" to me.

I am a new chicken mom, and got two black australorp chicks twelve weeks ago. Both were supposed to be female.

Now, I have this:

(oops, blurry head)

and then I have this one with a frilly no-tail butt, but big comb and wattles.

Huh?

Do I have two females? Feel free to criticize at will - I can take it, really, I can.

Thank you for your time -

laniered, to me the first one looks like a hen and the second a rooster. A lot of my roosters get that no tail look but don't worry it will grow.

here are some of mine.
i only have pictures of roosters, these guys are for sale.

::sigh:: That is exactly what I was afraid of. I'll wait for the crow to be sure, I guess, and then the final fill out of growth before I have to send him to freezer camp.

He will make my roo count, I do believe, 7/13. That's just not ... realistic. I love the hens too much for that.

Thank you for your reply, even though I was hoping to hear otherwise!

Poor lil' Frilly. That explains why he was so bossy to that second batch that's three weeks younger, though, doesnt it?

Beautiful little men you have there - they are gorgeous. Thank you for sharing!

Just a note to those seeking a more "Australian" shape to their hens here in the US, this spring we got a straight run batch of 8 from Dunlap in Idaho, and while there were only 3 hens in the lot, they look completely different (shape-wise) than my 6 hens from the year before (from a different hatchery). The new girls have short, blunt, round tail feathers, whereas the year before's girls have a very pointy, longer tail feather.
I can post some pics of the difference, if anyone is interested.

Brightest Blessings!
