Australorps breed Thread

Hello Tiger Creek! It has been ages since I've been on the forum. I just set 28 black aussie eggs yesterday evening. Hoping for a good hatch. Only thing that's bugging me is my homemade 'bator. Temp on left side is 104 47% humidity, and on the right it's 100 with 51%. Not a real concern, but I like to things to be uniform. This is my third hatch with this bator. I don't recall this great of a difference between the two extreme ends.

Shouldn't be that much of a differential unless there isn't a fan???? I'm sure you have checked your instruments?? 100 wouldn't bother me, but the 104 if correct would concern me some... Hope all goes well. Were you ever able to ask Mr. Gilbert about the Superior Farm line???

I have used a shot or glug of ACV from their first day on this planet and never have problems.

WV Dan,
Where ya been? I am breeding the Rattlesnake Ridge line of BBS Australorps this year. I have a batch coming out this week and another going in on Friday. I have set up 3 different breeding pens. 1 is all black and the other 2 are BBS Australorps.

Actually, I have two thermometers in the bator, have switched them back and forth several times to check, and yes there is a fan. I'm feeling a bit better now because I do see a 2-degree fluctuation on the "hot" side where the heat sensor is located of 102-104 degrees, and on the "cool" side where the fan is located of 100-99 degrees, no matter which thermometer is on either side. Funny thing, cool side humidity is 3% higher than hot side, but humidity is averaging around 49-50% overall. I used it to hatch some nice chicks last Sept. and nothing has changed that I can tell, so I hope if the eggs are fertile I will have a few chicks to raise.

Hi Kurt
Just working on things here at my place. Building an aquaponics system to grow fish and vegetables, working in the garden, building chicken pens, working my job, etc. Also working with Iowa Blue chickens a bit. Also began growing sprouted fodder for the chickens this winter out of barley, rye, and sunflower seeds. The chickens love it. It sure cuts down on the feed bill. I buy 50 lb. bags of seed and have a system set up to keep the fodder growing and available at all times. It's easy to do and requires only a few minutes a day. Best of all the fodder is about six times more nutritious than ordinary grain and processed food.

I was talking with a friend the other day who lives in PA and she was asking me if anyone is having white feathers showing up in their black australorps. I haven't heard of anyone else, but she says this year it has been bad. First time it has happened in her line which she has owned for 10 years. Has anyone else been having this or know of someone who does?

It does happen sometimes. It is an indication that thee was a White Leghorn crossed in at one time. For young Australops, a white feather or two will molt out at the Juvenile molt--16 weeks old or so.

I don't know what this is...???
Apple Cider vinegar. Supposed to use Organic and look for a clear looking thing floating in it. That is called the Mother and it is used to make new vinegar. It has Pro biotics and it can be added to wet feed to start fermentation for Fermented Feed.

ACV will corrode stainless steel so it should be used with non metal water fountains.
