Jim, What happened to your Blue project?

We did not keep any. Allowed others to go forward with our eggs. Then we lost our Splash male with a harsh winter storm. We do plan on watching a few this year with a different Blue Orp cockerel.

Sorry to hear that ...they were nice looking roos . How did you lose them ? Do you heat your coops ? Just them or did you loose hens too ?
Idiots roosted on the ground in our last severe winter storm. Plenty of covered protected roost space and they roosted together on the ground. Hens were fine and comfy inside.
We had them in one side of this coop just for the winter. In southeast Arkansas we rarely heat coops. This was a late unexpected freezing rain storm. Blew right in on them. We also lost a goat nearby. But life goes on. Life and death is a hard lesson on a farm.

okay, I think (maybe I read it wrong) someone said that an australorp x leghorn was a California white. But then I saw online that those are actually a different thing...maybe an actual breed? Anyway, so is an austra-white any type of leghorn or just the white leghorns? Never mind, you just said "white leghorn" what's the best pairing to make these?
Yep Yep, easy to tell as adults but I wasn't sure how splash look as chicks. I've had blue and I have had an austrawhite looking hen that was single gene dominant white over black like the Austra white. I wasn't sure what splash looks like as day olds compared to the austra white.

okay, so what gender is responsible for passing their egg laying abilities to their offspring? Would you want an australorp rooster or hen?I think a california white is Barred Rock x White Leghorn.
Austra-whites are specific to Australorp x White Leghorn crosses. Definitely want the White Leghorn variety from a hatchery - they are the ones best selected for egg production. Other varieties are not as well selected for egg laying.
To my understanding it's Black Australorp and only White leghorn to produce Austra-Whites, with the Australorp covering a WL hen. The White Leghorn has few if any peers and it's common knowledge that White Leghorn was used to create the Australorp as well as having a few additional infusions over the years, from what I'm told.okay, so what gender is responsible for passing their egg laying abilities to their offspring? The California White is produced by crossing a California Grey cock over a White Leghorn...I think a california white is Barred Rock x White Leghorn.

Thanks! I got them a bit mixed up. The California grey was produced by crossing Barred Rocks and White Leghorns then selecting out.The California White is produced by crossing a California Grey cock over a White Leghorn...
