Australorps breed Thread

I'm not in it for pure breeding... just for tasty eggs! Phew, I was worried she was sick or something haha

Our BA is still laying well, she is also the last of the flock to start her 1 year old molt, all the other hen graduates are looking shaggy and off the lay, but the reliable Aussie is still going well.

Hope she holds out a bit longer until on of the other girls come back to laying.

Yeah, but he's only 4 weeks old, so he's got a long way to go before he does the rooster version of chocolates, and dancing. Something else, he has discovered: he can jump off the little roost with his wings flapping, and land on the girls. He's soooo pleased with himself. The gals hate it, and the oldest, and largest (yeah, she's 12 hours older) was getting mad about it, and would chase and peck him UNTIL, she discovered she could do it too. They were taking turns jumping, and landing on the younger (12 hours younger) smaller gal. When he got down off the roost to get something to eat, older gal would jump on him, so if he wasn't on the roost, and she got on it, he would run over to her, and knock her off the roost, then go back to eat. The second time this happened, she started squawking. I KNOW she said "Mom, he pushed me". I fussed at all of them, and they've settled down.
SO FUNNY!

Quote: UH OH. By these pics I may actually have a roo instead of 5 13 day old pullet chicks from Cackle Hatchery. One has a comb like that but none of the others do at all. I will try to get pics tomorrow. Haven't quite regained use of my left hand yet from a nasty fall last week but I will take them ASAP. This could be a very interesting experiment. Hope there are several participants!

One of mine from Cackle had a bigger comb early and was a pullet.

They are over 90% accurate at sexing them. Unless the chick is obviously a Roo then do not stress over it.

Hello Everyone!

I've been reading in here but not posting as I was waiting for things to settle down. Had a horrific winter but things are better now. I have enjoyed the pics you have all posted especially of your chicks lately. Very cute. My two BA girls just had their first birthday on 4-26-2014. Time flies and looking at your chick pics made me long to have some more chicks. But the two of us here alone cannot keep up with consuming eggs from three hens as it is so it wouldn't be prudent. Anyway, I wanted to post pics of my girls from their birthday. It was a nice day so I was able to take a few shots. But I am not a very good photographer so out of a dozen these are the best. LOL Take them for what they are worth and all that.

I really do love Peppa and Bella but my 4 year old Barr Rock, Betsy, is my favorite. She never pecks me. But having said that, I have hope that Peppa and Bella will settle down as they mature as Betsy has done. Much like dogs the first few years before they mellow out I believe. Although personality does play a role for sure. Peppa is much like a roo watching over "her flock". hahaha. Bella is focused on one thing only. Food! Betsy is the boss and will peck the BA's if they peck me or if they don't mind their business where she is concerned. So that is my trio.
All my best,
~Dee~

Happy 1st Birthday Bella & Peppa!

Happy 1st Birthday Bella & Peppa!

Happy Birthday Bella and Peppa!

The eggs do stack up!

HI DEE!
those are very pretty ladies! I know what you mean about the eggs, we are already getting too many for us out of 4 hens ( 3 reds that just turned one and a 2 yr old leghorn mutt that took over as top hen when her old battery rescue friend passed away) tho one had some problems earlier and now lays eggs that have unappetizing bits of pigment etc. in them so I just save those up and then scramble them for a treat for the girls. Anyway, I am adding some girls even tho right now we don't need the eggs is two fold. First, I want to eventually have an entirely Aussie flock (my biggest dream is to have blues) and second I know my red sex-links probably won't lay that long and I am looking down the road.

Oh, and I am never lacking for folks more than willing to take any extra eggs off my hands
