Australorps breed Thread

My husband and I recently expanded our flock to 10 Australorps, and you know what that means... Quarantine!
After seven days of The Big Q, we let the flock mix in the open pasture out back. Only problem was, losing access to the coop (the six babies were locked in there for seven days to teach them where "home" is), our laying mamas got out of the habit of laying in the nest box.

So we have them ALL locked in the coop now to retrain the mamas to lay in the nest boxes. A few days should do it.

Thought I'd share. ^_^

MrsB
ours stay in till noonish ...most have laid by then..

When possible, do not quarantine in the coop/run area the rest of the flock will eventually be using. It would be devastating if they develop something that contaminates the main coop and/or run rendering it unfit for use for awhile. Use a separate quarantine area, or cages that are not too close to the coop, and main flock. (I even bathe, and use different shoes if going from quarantine to established flock.) It's wise to quarantine for a minimum of two weeks, but four is better. About a week prior to moving them with the others, or adjoining pen(s), take a little of the flooring material, whether it be sand, shavings, hay, whatever, and put it in the quarantine area, or cages. This will acclimate them to any new bacteria, etc. that will be in their new environment, which your current flock has already adapted to.

Here we go, little peep our Aussie Splash Australorp at 3 weeks old.

And you can imagine me here with my fingers crossed chanting "please be a girl, please be a girl"

Ive read you can sex by tail feathers arriving early (got tail pin feathers) and comb staying yellow. So tried to get photos of body parts in question LOL Not an easy task at all as peep is currently under review as a name and speedy is a distinct possibility. Its so funny, you open the little box they sleep in in the morning and its out the door, past you and out in the yard before Ive even got the door all the way open. Seems to be a game we like to play

So know we are really on the very edge of being old enough to sex an australorpe but gimme your best guess :) Im voting girl but not sure a 'feeling' counts as being scientific LOL

Relative size of feet and legs indicate roo to me. I had the same with my little gal turned guy. Here is a picture see the large legs and feet for chick size. My little guy was four weeks in this shot.

(Fingers in ears) La la la la I can't hear you! Staying in denial thanks lol. I will cry if the only chick to hatch turns out to be a boy lol

Sexing by tail feathers does not work for lorps.

It is much too early to tell gender. You will know at 6 to 10 weeks or so; one just needs to be patient. It is so hard though!

the chick is very pretty!

Nah you are all wrong I'm afraid. I refuse to allow it to be a boy! Lol

And who knows maybe australian australorps just look a bit more masculine. We breed girls tough over here you know lol

Do know it's a bit early to sex them, always interesting to see who got it right at the end of the day. Not going to loose too much sleep over it yet though, our last lot everyone said the boy was a girl and the girl a boy so we shall see what time brings us :). It's the friendliest little thing, it's mum has taught it to eat out of our hands and that we aren't scarey so it's actually friendlier at this age than the lot of incubated chicks we got the first time.
